Not true, a well made suit will allow you to do anything you can do normally without armour. If you just put all the armour in a bag and tried to lift it, yeah it'd feel heavy, but when you're wearing it you barely notice the weight at all.
I highly hope were just on different pages here, because I am talking about the steel armor from the medieval ages, if we are on the same page then you sir are a re-tar-tar.
No, you sir are a "re-tar-tar" and I am talking about armour from the Middle Ages. I own and know other people who own armour and I can tell you from personal experience that the myth of the helpless medieval walking tank is not true. Medieval armour was designed to be entirely ergonomic, it both distributed weight over your entire body and absorbed blows over an entire plate and through the thick padding worn under the armour. The only real disadvantage plate armour poses is heat, they get very very hot during the summer and you're more likely to see an armour wearer soaked in water to keep them cool on hot days than rolling around like a tortoise on his back. I'm telling you this from personal experience, I could wake up in the morning and put on my armour then go do EVERYTHING I do normally in the day without being hampered by it.
Steel armor in the middle ages weighed about as much as what modern soldiers carry today and as Raptor has said, the weight distribution really made it quite east to carry. Chainmail has worse weight distribution than plate, but with the addition of something as simple as a belt, it's distributed a lot better. Raptor, you might like this video and a lot of this guys videos
Beautiful work, keep it up!

holy shit that looks awesome. Can't wait to see what the finished product looks like.

It was in the late periods where metal helmets were bolted to the body armor that they could not get up, not the actual weight. My error good sir.
So hows it coming along?
So hows it coming along?
Read thread
I'm putting this on hold until July. Some blueprints I'd been waiting for finally arrived after over a month and while I'm kind of disappointed with them they'll help otherwise. The reason for this is I need about $300 in some special plywood and high quality spruce and the second sheet of steel I need to cut the rest of the armour pieces will cost me $50. July is the cutoff point if I can't make a $300 profit, but I'm sure that I can. Granted if I can make that $300 and then still be able to buy another sheet of steel for personal use I'll be able to start sooner. But I still have the Greaves to work on, I finished planishing one front piece and just need to work on the other and then planish the back pieces. The Helmet and Greaves are the two hardest parts, so that's why I did them first, the rest will be really easy to do once I get to them, but there's bigger fish to fry.
In short I don't have enough steel for the rest of the pieces and don't want to spend the $50 to get that steel because I'm saving that money for a bigger more awesome project.
I've also been pondering how the action on a MA5B might work. The problem is the bolt doesn't completely clear over the top of the magazine, meaning if it used a traditional bolt like an AR15 it would be unable to chamber a new round. I do have an idea on how to overcome this but I haven't tried it in practice yet. I also checked it and the MA5B with the magazine used by the rifle in-game can only hold 25 rounds of 7.62x51mm.
Future tech. :D
No worries, I may be short (Only 5 and a half feet tall and 125 pounds) but I'm strong and used to carrying heavy rifles/muskets and wearing heavy armour. The shin guards are actually surprisingly easy to wear and they don't interfere with my knees or my ankles. They also fit around my calves rather nicely without me feeling like my leg is being clamped in a vise like with my Roman greaves. The same goes for the Breastplate, when I first made it I was amazed at just how well it distributed energy over my entire torso rather than just on my ribs, I even allowed a friend to smack me in the chest with a sledgehammer. That said the Breastplate is made of 12 gauge steel while the Greaves and Helmet are made of 16 gauge steel so it is very solidly built.
The makers (bungie) said the gun is pretty much like the FN F2000 and the description of how it works, if you are unaware is: The MA5B rifle is a bullpup rifle and is made of Titanium Alloy and Polymer - the rifle is a gas-operated weapon with a rotating-bolt and therefore must be cocked before the first shot can be fired. The charging handle used to chamber the round is situated on the left side of the rifle and moves during operation. Once the first round is fired, the gases from that round and those to follow impinge upon a gas piston, which pushes back the bolt carrier, rotating the bolt inside and continuing to chamber rounds until the magazine is empty. Once the magazine is empty, the charging handle must both be pulled back and locked or, must be fully cycled after a fresh magazine is inserted to load the next round. The magazine itself is located at the butt of the rifle and the magazine release button is located above the magazine housing and has an arrow pointing down toward the housing.
The problem with that is they don't explain how the bolt is able to move far enough over the top of the magazine to actually chamber a new round on it's own. I've examined the Steyr Aug, FN 2000 and AR15, none of them fit inside the MA5B because the bolts all clear over the top of the magazine, the MA5B doesn't have any room for the bolt to clear over the top of the magazine so if you used one of those three actions you would be unable to chamber a new round from the magazine. So no, the MA5B is not like any of those three rifles nor is it like any other rifle in existence, even the TKB-022 doesn't make a match for the MA5B. For the MA5B to really work it would need to have a two stage action. First the gun is fired and the empty shell ejected from the gun to the right, the bolt retracts to the rear of the receiver, about half way over the top of the magazine. Along with the bolt a second arm moves back over the magazine and locks the bolt in place, preventing it from moving forward again. Next, with the bolt remaining stationary the arm strips a new round from the magazine and partially chambers it. As the arm moves forward the bolt is unlocked and allowed to move forward, fully chambering the new round, allowing the gun to be fired again. I've taken concepts from both the AR15 and an M1 Carbine to do this, I just need to experiment with the actual mechanism.
sounds like a lot of fun.
Or you could just create a potato cannon. :smug:
Already done that. Real guns are more interesting for me now.
You could make a WII artillery cannon.
Raptor, Suggestion for a project for you, A Roman Scorpion.
I see your Scorpion and raise you a Polybolos. But not yet.
Hot dog raptor, you're too damn awesome.

Another Idea, make an Egyptian Khopesh (Not a Greek Kopis, the two sometimes get mixed up) More an Axe than a Sword though.
Another Idea, make an Egyptian Khopesh (Not a Greek Kopis, the two sometimes get mixed up) More an Axe than a Sword though.
That's a sick idea.
If I make anything it'll probably be a longsword to go with my Matchlock. I need to get working on that for September too, there's a big medieval event that they have every year at a museum in Boise. The Civil War and WWII reenactors come around and fire their cannons and howitzers too, lots of fun. Last year NASA brought around a shuttle flight simulator too, was one of those rides with the moving seats inside this big trailer with a wrap around screen and a shuttle cockpit inside. Plenty of time though.
Wear it, and then take another picture so we can see comparison.
It's not wearable yet. I cut the side of my thumb off last time I was out working on the Wheellock so I'm waiting for that to heal because when I try to hammer it pops open and bleeds everywhere. Yes I tried duct taping it shut.
Raptor, you are my idol and my inspiration.
What plasma cutter do you have? I'm in the market for one right now.
