I'm waiting for an update, the suspense is killing me.
its killing everyone.
Shit man, that's really fucking cool I mean it I can't help but think of that halo kid video though
Halo kid didn't have a plasma torch and a welder. I may resume work in a day or two, my thumb is pretty much healed to the point where it won't come apart anymore. I just wanna finish my R36 rifle models and try to put em into ArmA 2.

Is it just me, or do the Marines in Halo 2 and 3 look like complete wimps compared to Halo: CE marines?

I'm getting into welding, buying my welder tomorrow. Nothing super special, a Hobart Handler 210. But for a first welder I'm sure it'll be more than enough. I can't afford a good plasma and I don't want to settle for one that can only cut sheet metal, I think I'll get a torch setup just for rough work and to get a feel for the medium. I bought a nice Dewalt grinder as well.
Well since UDF got me started... We'll assume that Marine's in the Halo games have gotten over civil fights and no longer fight in situations where we use bullets, or normal projectiles. Having established that, we know that we're fighting Plasma weapons + Piercing needle shards. The main idea behind the armor is probably to diffuse plasma. Assuming all of the metal plates are plasma diffusing along with the boots, the Marine is fairly well covered. His wrists are decently shielded if he covers his face with it, and his chest and 'unaware' sides of the legs are shielded. Now here's the (overly bumpmapped) Halo 2 Marine: They've reduced the chest armor to synthetic material pouches. Not very good for diffusing plasma. To top that off they've reduced them to leg pads and only mid-shin high guards. Overall the image is less armor and more well... Civilian/modern? Pathetic! Halo 3. They've brought back some of the armor plating and overall bulking him up. However his thighs don't have their previous protective look. I think it was mostly the additional polies that were spent making things look more intricate and round that took away the defensive appeal. The Halo 1 marines were armor in the brute-force sense. "Our technology can't diffuse plasma through synthetic materials, so we'll use plate metal to do it." This taps into the 'badass' category of feelings and causes those.
Well since UDF got me started...
That's part of what bothers me about Halo 2 and 3, hell it's what bothers me about most big budget games these days is they overdetail EVERYTHING. They make the characters such a mess of details that they actually seem less detailed because your brain doesn't want to put forth the effort of unscrambling it during gameplay. The Halo 1 Marines were simple in design, just a grey BDU, black load bearing vest for the armour with simple and very practical looking stamped plate. Why DOES the Halo 3 marine need all those weird edges? It really can't make him any more protected and it just looks more expensive to make. It's just developers falling back on the overdetail crutch to make the graphics seem better when they aren't. I'm pointing my finger at Bethesda too with their super ornate swords and armour, which are even less useful in combat than Halo 2-3's armour.
