My grandfather once gave me a sore throat remedy consisting of honey, gin, salt, and warm water. The honey coats your throat, the gin numbs it, and I forget what the other two do. If you don't like honey (and you have stated already that you don't), pinch your nose and think of feeling better. It worked for me. But, everyone's different. Just my two cents.

My tonsils are very different in size... My left one is like a 1/4 the size of my right one.
