This is what many people say is the only thing that could hold China back from an invasion. If America is destroyed, China instantly loses its hundreds of trillions of dollars it loaned the US. If it had a better fleet to transport troops, China could steamroll the US, but due to a matter of profit, it can't.

I don't know if they'd be able to take the US.
Even with most of our armed forces abroad we still have a small but well-equipped and competent military force here. Add to it at least a million pissed off rednecks who would be behind every other tree. With that kind of resistance alone they'd get bogged down in the Rockies at the very least.
Then the bulk of our army which is stationed all over the world would pretty much swarm anything that has anything to do with China, probably invading their mainland or cutting off support for the Chinese forces that would have made it into California (where they would be greeted as liberators, knowing the stupid state I live in).
I think all told it would be a pretty balanced fight that would get bogged down in a bloody stalemate of no benefit to either part involved. Then there is the atomic weapon factor which screws everything up.

Good point. Overall, I think China could win militarily, the US would dominate the strategic (blockades, naval attacks, etc.) aspect, and neither side could really capture the other. Nuclear war added to the mix only makes it more costly.

Exactly.
The US may hold a massive number advantage, but we have better-trained infantry. At balanced numbers, we'd probably win a battle, but considering how many troops the US could muster, a balanced battle wouldn't happen.
I'd call any country where one of the biggest problems in health care is obesity problems rich.
Still there are poor people in those countries, but that's a problem of distribution of wealth, not wealth in general.
