Guys you should totally check out this song my guitar teacher composed.
Do people here know some actual theory and apply it to their work?
Theory of what?
I use music theory in my songwriting yeah
No, never. I've never had an instrument lesson in my life, nor can I read music or guitar/bass tablature. The understanding of what sounds good can come from anywhere - You don't have to be trained in the ways of theory to produce interesting music. It can come from just being musically aware and knowing what 'feels' right for a piece or song. It's more of a feeling than anything else. Unorthodox technique makes for a more inventive approach a lot of the time. My fave band ever, Mono - They all taught themselves to play their instruments, don't read music but their compositions are as grand as that of an orchestra with many different moods. Their guitarist Taka also composes all the string arrangements for their songs without writing them down on a stave, just in his head - Because he's heard enough music throughout his life to know what a harmony is and which harmonies are likely to work. He obviously works with someone to translate the arrangements to sheet music so a string quartet can perform it on the albums, but still - Entirely composed by him. Destroy the boundaries!!
Destroy the boundaries!!
Dude no one is saying it's impossible to work without theory, just shitloads easier
Working without music theory is like sculpting a stone statue without a hammer. No matter how many times you argue that it is a tool, people don't get it. They will point to people who made sculpted great statues with their finger nails and say "ha, see, you didn't need music theory after all, look what this person did with their bare hands".
Do people here know some actual theory and apply it to their work?
Yes, they do.
Yeah, now that I'm taking piano lessons, I use theory daily. I also sometimes sight-read when I play drums. So much easier than remembering :v: Anyways, I have made like 3 different tunes, and I can't finish them. I don't know what to do.. It always comes to a part where the start sounds cool, and then it just stops :(
Make a classical masterpiece where the song shifts all the time. No but seriously, just keep making stuff untill you feel like you really got something to go for. [editline]1st October 2011[/editline] Or make something, write it down / record it, then do something with it the next day.
Like this? :v: Only classical'ish tune I've ever made. Sort of Jesper Kyd meets Philip Glass. It's kinda old, so there's some weird timing issues(since I had no idea you could quantize) Ah well, I'll go work on something..
Wow that's a really nice song you've got there, yeah you'll definitely come up with something.
I was bored so I played around with my keyboard a bit. Take a quick listen if you want to
Sounds good, would love to see something come out of that.
Sounds good, would love to see something come out of that.
As would I, but I kind of forgot how I played it already.
As would I, but I kind of forgot how I played it already.
Well, make something alike that with some rhythm and melodies.
This is not my song I had a go at mixing some publicly available multitracks, This one happens to be "Night owl" by "A Classic Education" I think this is an excellent song, fun to mess with too. Didn't know where to put this so I'll just dump it here, I feel like a cheat posting stuff I didn't write in creative music :v:
Well, make something alike that with some rhythm and melodies.
I had a few ideas on how to progress from that point, so I'm going to see if I can remember how it went.
Theory of what?
theory of music.

Does anyone else have the problem where you write something and you think it might be from somewhere and you're not sure exactly where it's from and the reason it's familiar is because you've worked on it so much? I'm having that problem right now.

Fuck.
My brain decided to get up in the middle of the night, walk downstairs, open up FL studio, and make some music. It sounded pretty good so I tried to fix it up a bit. All I really have to do is raise the volume of a track during one specific section, finish a guitar solo that I didn't finish and write an ending. Anyone know how to do the volume raising of a track at one moment in FL studio? I know it has something to do with the mixer but I have no idea how to use it.
Aww, I made a thread for a song but nobody bothered to post in it
Decided to go ahead and post my song, ending kind of sucks and the transitions sound awful to me but it's better than anything else I've made. [editline]2nd October 2011[/editline] I can't belive I forgot to post a link http://soundcloud.com/neos300/i-was-asleep-when-i-made-this

I gave it a try with a jazz fusion one, tried to build on making each and every instrument get his own shine in the sun and to just generally work on making it interesting with pan changes etc. =) As stated, it's a remix.
