Does anyone have any tips to get a good 80's metal sound for a guitar? My amp is a decently large Line 6 but it sounds kind of tinny and weak (maybe because it's a Spyder), and if I turn up the distortion so I can play solos effectively it sounds sloppy no matter what I play.

Give a reference track maybe?

medium gain, lots of volume, a little bit of reverb. some chorus couldn't hurt either.

if there's a tube amp preset on your amp you might as well use that too. everyone was using a tube amp back then
Hey, I'm possibly going to be doing some recording in a few weeks, and I just have a short question:
I need to record some different instruments, and I was thinking that I would be doing it like this:
This guy in the bass (guitar, mixer, etc.), with one of these in one of slot (With a Jack going to an amplifier), and simply a mini-jack going to my laptop. Does any of you guys see any apparent problem with this idea?

The inputs on your laptop will be really shitty.
Buy an external soundcard.

I guess they are, but this is really just to play a little around with it. I might buy an external sound card at some point, but I'm not really ready to throw a bunch of money after it, yet. I would have to have these cables anyhow.
If I was buying a decent external sound card, what would you recommend, and at what price?
I have a bit of a question. Since I'm getting pretty serious about music production, I want to buy some decent studio monitors. Defenitely getting active speakers, that's for sure. But I'm wondering how would I go about connecting these to my laptop. I have a USB audio interface (Line 6 Pod Studio UX1) that I use for recording guitar stuff. Can I just plug the monitors into the two analog outputs that I have on the back of the audio interface and get a good sound? Or do I need like, a better interface?

Nah, I think you'll be fine with the Line 6.
Yur|ko where have you been, haven't seen you post in a while.
Especially not in my last 2 musician's gig room threads.
I almost felt abandoned.
:(
Playing a pretty big blues-gig tomorrow. Warming up for the biggest(local) band. They have some kind of blues-brothers theme going, and I'm already nervous..
Did you get any kind of recording of it? I'd love to hear it.
My friend played last night as the opening act for another band. Pretty big venue for some 14-15 year olds. I want to steal their drummer.

Thanks man, saves me some money. Don't want to blow to much money on this since I'm really just starting out (for real) as a producer. I've been working with DAWs for years but nothing serious, just trying to find my own style and evaluating what DAW suits me best and whatnot.
I'm getting these speakers by the way, they're pretty cheap but I've read a lot of positive reviews on them. They seem ideal for people like me who are just starting out, they're Behringer B2031As. They go for a mere €140 each.

Only recording was 18 seconds long. But I have a recording from the last gig at:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14jHEzk6rkY&feature=channel_video_title
Well looks like I'm going to have to need a new audio interface anyway, since the tip of my 1/4 inch guitar cable got stuck in the only instrument input on the Pod UX1 after I wanted to unplug my cable. The actual jack came out but the little tip is still in there.
Seriously there's no way of getting that little tip out. It's locked in place and the only way to open this damn plastic box is by irrepairably wrecking it, not a single screw to be found on the thing.

Roland MA-15Ds are about the same price and have a similar frequency response but are built better.
[editline]24th December 2011[/editline]
and you can adjust EQ and volume on the front panel if you really want to
They really sound that bad?
I did my entire college course (2 years) with the college supplied MA-15Ds - My god they were awful, they had the drivers and box but the amp just didn't have the "oomph" to support them.
Your experiences may differ, I didn't like them. - They probably are the best in that price range.
I actually nearly went for the B2031As when I wanted to buy something for myself.

my only complaints with them are that they're very directional, you have to adjust the monitors just right to get the ball of sound in your chair, and that the cable that comes with them is pretty small, you're better off replacing it with a heavier cable to avoid power dissipation.
as far as the amp, it gets loud enough for my small studio room, so it might just be my setup that works well with them. I'm not the type to crank shit up to 11, I can enjoy quiet music just fine.

This is crazy cool stuff.
Where do you get your inspiration from? I really like your liquid dnb too.
the inspiration for that remix mostly came from a group called dark sky, but on a personal level i would say my greatest inspirations are daft punk, justice, phace & misanthrop, noisia and teed
I'm having too much fun with the vocoder. I wish I would have found this ages ago.

So I got a Monotron for Christmas. Here is a sober brap.
Just bought the new computer music magazine! It has some interesting tips and tutorials about mastering, can't wait to get home and try them :v:. My new headphones (akg k-701) should arrive by then too. Shit gonna be good
I'm looking for the absolute simpliest way to connect a normal guitar jack to the computer via usb without a mixer or any of that- But without sacrificing sound quality. Any suggestions?
