How do you do those really staccato dubstep wobbles basses? Like the ones huggybear_13 posted: http://soundcloud.com/mandc/test-promo-wip/s-mubvr
Turn the sustain down to zero and fuck around with the decay on the amp envelope

The buzzing only started after I connected it using the usb cable and used LMMS to sequence the synth. I've done some tests and have confirmed the buzzing is only recorded if I have the usb cable connected, even if LMMS isn't running and I am just using the keyboard.
Any ideas?
Sounds like a ground loop. Removing the USB cable will be removing one leg of the loop and stopping it from happening.
There are ways to stop it, off the top of my head, some ideas:
Cut the ground on the audio or USB cable going to the computer
If your synth has a "GND Lift" switch, engage it (You'd need to use the main outputs if it does as typically these switches will not effect headphone outputs)
Use a cheap DI box as an isolation transformer (Again a type of ground lift)
Get an isolation transformer
If you have other peripherals connected to your computer try removing them, especially ones that take power from an external source, such as a printer.
If this is a laptop, unplug it from the mains and run it on battery. (This sometimes works, I'm actually surprised how often it does)
Just found a preset on Native Instruments Massive that was obviously used in a Portal 2 track. (preset called "Action to Reaktion"
You can start with REAPER, it's kinda free.
Ah yes, REAPER is a pretty quality program with the right stuff added on. A couple of custom VSTs and a sampler and you should be set. A bit of a warning: if your system isn't up to par it can get pretty batshit laggy.
There's also NINJAM, which is pretty fun to mess around with if you happen to be into playing instruments. Even then, if you have some hardware synths and such that you can sync with the MIDI on your computer (i believe ninjam outputs a clock thingy im not sure though i haven't messed around with it in a whuile), you can use that.
I'm already making an ass of myself on my first post. Darn.
EDIT: Also, I'll probably be posting some music of mine tomorrow. I've been getting back into it after a long hiatus. Which happens to somewhat coincide with the last time I lurked on this site! Fun.
found the double bass vst in kontakt and couldn't resist doing something metroid inspired
it gets kinda silly near the end just cuz i did it only because i couldn't fall asleep but hey so wHAT
I was really looking for a more specific answer...
Well there is a LOT to making music. I really recommend getting the FL Studio demo and watching tutorials
i feel bad for only posting own music and not giving help on how to perhaps maybe make better music but i dont know how to make criticism good, can anyone give a guide on how to make good criticism?

Just state your opinion, do you like what you hear? If not, why not? Is there something he can do better or should change?
Really, just writing one sentence with that is all you need to do and all the musician needs.

Got a mic for christmas and I've finally got time to learn how to use it
Still having trouble making the drums feel "real" though, any tips to improve the sound?

If i'm not mistaken you need to mic the drums too.
Im using a drum machine as it is seeing as i dont have access to a million mics and a drumset
Im using a drum machine as it is seeing as i dont have access to a million mics and a drumset
I noticed in the recording it was just really quiet. If you could turn it up some I think it will sound alright.
Also if you're using a drum machine (I don't know which one you're using) but try out different drums. I have a buddy that uses a drum machine and if he has it on some settings it's ridiculously quiet compared to other settings. Assuming you're running this though a mixer you might want to bump up the highs and keep the lows slightly lower than normal.
i feel bad for only posting own music and not giving help on how to perhaps maybe make better music but i dont know how to make criticism good, can anyone give a guide on how to make good criticism?
Point out flaws in the song. If you can, explain why something doesn't work and how to fix it. Make suggestions of things that might sound better. Comment on what sounds good and why it sounds good. Don't try to be mean with your critique, but don't be afraid to be harsh.
Criticism is a great way to improve your ability to make music. It helps you understand what it is good and what is bad and why.

No no no. That's not what I meant at all. I apologize that I was unclear.
I know a lot about making music and all that kind of shit. I want to know what specific genre of "house" that is so I can find more similar stuff and dissect what kind of techniques and instruments is used to make it.

Ah, well yeah it's not pure house,t he last song on there for example is garage.
Anyway, it is very atmospheric, lots of background noise and reverb. That's the basis. Then there is lots of treble, very high end heavy, with some focus on the subbass. Middle frequencies are a little neglected. There seem to be reverbed small snippets of samples here and there, just a little. Then there are pads, bass and some melodyish stuff adding to the feeling.
It's very atmospheric and reverb heavy, with lots of high frequency stuff. It gives it a heavenly cloudy fluffy feel.
That should get you started.
[editline]23rd January 2012[/editline]
And the melodies are very clean and thought through, stick to a scale.
watch youtube tutorials lol
I reckon electronic producers and traditional musicians should have their own separate threads.
Why?
I reckon electronic producers and traditional musicians should have their own separate threads.
Traditional music thread would be a quite neglected I fear, and it's all just music. Besides I like hearing how electronic musicians perceive an acoustic track, and how traditional musicans perceive an electronic track.
Why?
organization
because if i see another "my frist dubmstep song!" thread ill quit the internet
I'm going to be honest, I am sick of hearing the stuff.
I'm just not hearing anything new.
I don't know. I'd personally populate the "Traditional" forum. As much as I enjoy music technology and the design and application of synthesisers and such.
Edit:
In case that came across wrong, this isn't a "STOP MAKING DUBSTEP WAH WAH WAH" whine post. It's a "I keep giving this stuff a chance but I just keep hearing the same thing"... post. Key thing, I give it a chance.
I need some advice on buying some equipment. Microphone, usb sound card etc. Can anyone help me out over a chat or something?
What kind of mic's are you looking for? What are you going to record and how many inputs do you need for your soundcard?
Welp, I just discovered that mum saved the cable to the broken printer she threw out and said she thought it might be useful. I didn't really know of anything else to use that cable, until I checked the back of my MM6 to find it fits right into the usb to host port. I really have zero knowledge about midi in or midi out, so crisis averted.
