Excuse me for not having a good knowledge of DNS, herp derp.
Everything on the left side of facepunch.com doesn't matter, those are simply subdomains. The commonly used one is www, to denote that page is hosted by a webserver, no other reason really. No subdomain is entirely valid too. And FP is just setup so any subdomain leads to the same page.
