• Raising $10,000 in 50 days for a Film Noir series - Can you help?

To everyone questioning the amount of money, you would be amazed at the sort of projects that raise far more than 10k on Kickstarter. Kickstarter is a fucking magical money WONDERLAND.
I've been writing the series for quite some time. It's gone through several iterations in the past year, and has finally settled in. Sure, the trailer doesn't exactly do everything justice, but that's because one, we don't have a budget, and two, you can't even hear the actors for the majority of it. What exactly about the acting is horrible?
Body language is a huge part of it, It pretty much ruins the illusion of a film with that feeling I can best describe as awkward. Asking for 10,000 is a joke, the trailer is a poor representation and you even implied yourself that it was poorly put together. And then you throw a fit because people give you their honest opinion on the situation with the lovely little line
To everyone cracking jokes and poking fun at every little thing they can - thank you. Thank you for ruining what I've been working my ass off to get started for over a year. I appreciate it. Obviously asking for help here was a bad idea.
Haha, i'm sorry the people in this thread ruined your dreams? That's pathetic dude and just lends to the theory that you don't know what you're doing. If you're so dedicated to this project then throw something solid together like a pilot and GET PEOPLE INTERESTED, then they'll shower you with cash. Right now all you have is a bad interpretation of what you want done and have your hand out waiting for it to just start rollin' in. get creative

I'm just saying they can have a little respect. Something more than comments about $10,000 acting lessons and jokes about all of this. And I didn't say the trailer was poorly put together, I said it doesn't fully do everything justice. It's purely a teaser. There's not much to it besides giving a quick taste of what it's all about, without giving too much of the plot away. There will be a "making of" video up soon, with unused footage, and some talk from the cast and crew about how things have come together, about their characters, etc.
If raising that amount of money was that easy, I would have been a billionaire.
If raising that amount of money was that easy, I would have been a billionaire.
But it's not easy, as evident by this thread. At least 5 backers have already put us at 5% of our goal...

If you are posting a trailer, teaser, pilot, whateverthefuck, make sure it's really good. Make sure it does the thing justice. You can't just give excuses to other people. In your eyes it's beautiful despite its flaws, and hey it doesn't even do the thing justice, right? Well we can't see inside your head. If you are going to spend a lot of time on a project, you can't just throw out half-finished stuff and assume people will pay for it. That'd be like me releasing a half finished album of music or game(okay minecraft kinda did this) and ask for donations to finish it. Also, that acting is not good. I do not believe in a single character, it doesn't make me feel like I'm actually watching these events unfold, everyone seems too aware they are being filmed. Also the editing is annoying, so many jumpcuts. You should use some other kinds of transitions and portray some more interesting scenes. It just looks like you spliced together a bunch of random footage.

What do I have to show to convince you guys that there's plenty of commitment and work behind this all? The only things I really have to show are the scripts and concept art, which are both things I'd like to keep pretty close to heart, unless it's the concept art being sent out as rewards.
You could put more effort and time into your trailer.
I did... it took so long just to get enough footage for it all... I put effort into it. I was proud of the result. It could have much more to it. But it doesn't. That'll go into a more in-depth trailer that does more than just tease. Or hell, screw another trailer, it'll just be the first episode at this point. We were strained for time to begin with, now we're strained for time to raise enough money, then when we have enough money, we're strained for time to film and complete as many episodes as we can before our time is strained even more once the majority of the cast leave the state for college.

Why would you rush something together which you've spent like a year on? I'd rather wait another year or twelve and finetune the script and do small preparations first. Hell it'd also give you some solid time to raise money.

The only problem is the funding. Which we now have 49 days to get $9.5k for.
This would be a really good scam to pull, i mean spend a week making a trailer and ask enough people for donations and you're bound to make a few bucks
You don't need money to have better editing. Expensive equipment/software =/= a good movie. You can have a better looking film (editing and compasition wise) on an even cheaper budget.
The quality of work you posted isn't even close to being worthy of a $20 donation. Maybe, if you work on you camera work, editing, and definitely the acting you could get some people to fund you. You need to prove that you have enough talent to tackle a job like a series. Its not something you can finish in a couple days. A series could take a month to shoot. I don't think you need $10,000 to make something good. My buddy makes films biweekly in film school and does it with basically no budget. Editing, camera movements, and sound is 95% of a movie. You would be surprised what you can make for not spending a dime. just an example of what he does: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLnvX2Z3ibA&list=UUWJ0pV8UVBVJWRxIzT9uhSw&index=1&feature=plcp
Judging by that trailer, yea, it really doesn't look like it's worth of $10,000 bucks. Actually watching it again, it doesn't look like it's worth anything. You have a good Camera, you just need some good recording equipment and that will cost you like $500 max if you shop smart. All the money in the world can't help that acting though.
The biggest issue I think is the acting, it looks so forced, there's nothing natural about it. IMO you can make amazing things with some decent acting/camera angles and a good location. Maybe you could post the breakdown of what that 10,000 is even for. Because no one in the thread seems to understand the need for it.
The biggest issue I think is the acting, it looks so forced, there's nothing natural about it.
I don't see the need to make a final decision from a few seconds of acting. It's pointless to judge until an actual piece is made.
out of curiosity, where's all that $10,000 going to? because for an amateur film project, that's still kind of expensive(unless you dont have cameras/sets already)
The first Clerks Movie had a budget of about ten grand. It's now a cult phenomenon. :v:
The first Clerks Movie had a budget of about ten grand. It's now a cult phenomenon. :v:
El Mariachi costed $7000 and that was a cult phenomenon too. [editline]6th February 2012[/editline] even Eraserhead had literally no budget and managed to be a mindbending experience.
The acting is bad, the filters look horrible, the name is just silly, the camera work is shoddy and looks weird. You want 10,000$ you better show us something that would justify that cost. As of right now, it doesn't even justify 10$.
I don't see the need to make a final decision from a few seconds of acting. It's pointless to judge until an actual piece is made.
Well considering he said there were few lines of dialogue and thus little acting I don't hold out much hope.
Well considering he said there were few lines of dialogue and thus little acting I don't hold out much hope.
Yeah but judging a potential movie by its trailer isn't saying much.
You've already managed to get over $500 in donations. You should be over the fucking moon to have received so much with what can only be described as a bad trailer. At the very least, you should be filming what you can, taking pictures of things on the set, and regularly updating some kind of blog (a simple blogger page would be fine) to show that you're actually doing something.
How about you look for volenteers that can bring equipment and talent for free? I know from experience there's plenty of people that would come down to help you if you cover their travel costs. I've done some recruiting for a friends starting company.
Yeah but judging a potential movie by its trailer isn't saying much.
You have got to be kidding. Movie trailers are enough to spot when a film near release is going to be terrible. A teaser for a project that hasn't even started is more than enough to know what you're getting yourself into.
You want GOOD MOVIES with shit trailers then?
Neither of those are bad trailers. You get the sense of the plot, they're entertaining enough, and they grab interest just fine. The point is that trailers and teasers are supposed to grab the viewers interest. If the teaser for a project that hasn't even been started yet has as many problems as this "No-Hands Jones" idea does, it's very easy to see that even with a ridiculous amount of money the talent just isn't where it needs to be. Well, at least for that scale of a project.
You have to make an actual pilot before even asking for money, even real shows does that. So yeah, with no pilot how do we know if it's going to be decent?
Neither of those are bad trailers. You get the sense of the plot, they're entertaining enough, and they grab interest just fine.
You haven't seen either movie have you.
