The law has no place in that, and you feeling uncomfortable about things people do completely independent of you isn't grounds for state intervention. There are many paedophiles who are aware of their illness and would never hurt a child, but still have these sick thoughts. It's extremely difficult for them. It still goes on though, since majority of the people don't seem to care because it doesn't concern their livelihoods, and again, it's deemed as legal because those sites don't show anything infringing on Japanese law

I'd rather they use these kind of things than actually hunt down children.[/QUOTE] While this is true, I don't really like how the idea of the tormented pedophile is used in a kind of "appeal to misery" to defend them - I feel like it encourages them to stew in self-hate and just accept that they're unfixable freaks with mental problems who've gotta fight off "urges" all the time, which I don't think is really the case. They [I]do[/I] have problems that need fixing, but with the melodramatic way that they're seen it could actually make them feel like it's not worth looking for help, or at least ways to make their life easier. Between that and the dudes who just want to shoot them all, it's like a pincer with self-flagellation on one side and violence on the other. It could even lead to these more sympathetic pedophiles becoming downright nasty as their life goes on. With that in mind I'd say an easily-accessible outreach program is probably the best way to tackle the problem. That way the ones who think they need help can get it, and the ones who don't can get arrested (or just sit in their basements feeling sorry for themselves and never jerking off I guess).
