I probably could have been on the swim team at my college if I cared enough about swimming. The only thing I could never do was that somersault thing they do to turn around. Other than that I could swim really fast and dive pretty well. And I'd probably look retarded in a speedo.
join a swim team and get a coach, then get sexy muscles like me :smug: [editline]06:44PM[/editline] get varsity + swim captain, and then we'll talk. :3
100yd swim time is at around 1:00 right now. Hoping to get into varsity next year
I used to teach swim lessons. Generally the earlier you learn to swim, the better. Kids who learn to swim at ages 3-4 usually turn out to be much better swimmers than kids who don't learn until they are 7-8, for example. How old are you exactly? If you're like 16 or something then understand that you're going to be learning how to stay afloat, you will never be michael phelps, sorry. But as some people in this thread have mentioned, keep air in your lungs and your body has a natural tendency to float. Also, it's important to get over the fear of putting your face in the water early. The number one mistake I see is that people get out into water where they can't touch the bottom and suddenly they are struggling with all their might to keep their heads above water. It's a natural reaction but its wrong. You have to get over the fear of your head going underwater, it's a normal part of swimming. Don't worry your head is not going underwater forever. Practice in the shallow end of the pool your swimming technique, if you have never taken swim lessons, take one. If you're afraid of embarrassing yourself get a private lesson.
My boyfriend doesn't really swim either but I absolutely love swimming and I use to be pretty good at it. As long as you just relax and move through the water at an even pace (even if that is a slow pace) you'll be fine. If you get all stressed about it you'll probably just flail and sink.
You'll never be able to save a hot chick from drowning if you cant swim man.
-snip-
That's like a baby who can't walk making a forum thread asking people if they can't walk or if they are olympic runners! [editline]11:19PM[/editline]
Also, our school didn't have a swimming class, it didn't even have a swimming pool.
Why would a school have a swimming pool? No schools have their own swimming pools.

I prefer to be below water so then i know i can't drown?
I prefer to be below water so then i know i can't drown?
What?
I learned to swim when I was 4 in an Olympic pool back in my country. My parents were rich in my homeland. Not so much here in the US though.
I'd love to hear your life story.
my school has a pool, an olympic sized swimming pool.
The tradition outside states usual is to get the kids to a public pool or if you live in the middle of nowhere, into a lake and teach there. Atleast when I was little, we all got into a bus, drove 5 minutes to the huge local whatever-you-call-it that has places outdoor fields for football and shit like that and also an in-door pool. It's like a park, but for sports.
First lesson in 30 minutes :ohdear:
The trick to swimming is to always have air in your lungs.
Bullshit, I fill my lungs with air to the point where it hurts and I still sink like a rock.
I tried everything, I can't tread water and it pisses me off. I did everything fast, did everything slow, tried every technique available to tread water and I still sink. I can swim and float on my back badly but it works. But treading water is what I want the most but I can't do it. I also tried holding my breath, breathing fast and breathing slowly.
50m Freestyle Short Course 27.3 Seconds. :smug: [editline]10:27AM[/editline]
First lesson in 30 minutes :ohdear:
PANIC THE TEACHERS ARE GOING TO RAPE YOU. I know that because I am one.
good luck, have fun. and don't panic.
That wasn't so bad. In fact it was good. I can sort of swim now, like 10 feet, and then attempt to breathe in, then drown.
that's good progress, you should practice on your own if you can, but bring someone to watch you.
Thanks, I'm proud myself too. My next lesson is supposed to be on Monday, but my dad insists to send me to SAT prep school instead. Darn. Question, when I do the egg beater, my right knee cracks when it's doing the arc in the circle/oval side to side, augh. Maybe I didn't stretch enough? Actually, no, I did stretch, and you can't really stretch your knee, well pull it back.. but then if I pull it back too far it'll crack too.
I live in florida, and like venn said a while back, you really can't not learn how to swim here. my parents had me take swimming lessons when i was in preschool, so i really can't remember a time when swimming wasn't a natural thing to me. All i remember from the lessons was that they dunked your head under the water at one point to get you used to the feeling (though i'm surprised that didn't put me off swimming for good!). Best of luck to you, just keep trying and i'm sure you'll get it eventually!
Don't go to the deep end... don't be scared to grab some description of flotation device... Iunno a noodle or something.
Floating is fun but some people thinks i'm dead
I sink. Alot.

Do you have a local swimming pool? If so you could go there and train when your cousin isnt helping you. It helped me alot, though I had to take 8 Swimming Classes(~20 lessons each) before I learnt how to swim, over the course of 2 years.
You should control your breathing pattern to your action, always make sure the time holding your breath and the time breathing follow in sequence. =Breath= =hold= =hold= =Breath= =hold= =hold= Using this with any swimming styles you're learning can speed up time it takes for you to get it down. Most people that start learning styles always follow irregular patterns, =Breath= =hold= =hold= =Breath= =hold= =Breath= =hold= =hold= =hold= and end up swallowing water, water filled with piss and semen. Come to think of it, the water is touching everyone's balls and vaginas so if you do take in water.... I don't want to swim anymore...
How can you not swim? It's a piece of piss.
