• Skywatching: It's cooler than you might think

Spotting sattelites zoom past when they catch the suns reflection is always cool. Filmed this Lunar Eclipse a few years ago, nothing special about the quality, was just nice looking.
Is that a forest fire?
It's smoke from a paper factory.
http://www.google.com/sky/skymap/ i have this on my android and i can tell what any constellation or star is its ballin
I think I found my first star cluster with my 70mm Spotting Scope. Either it was a fluke because the cluster appeared as a very bright star, or it was a real cluster. The center was the most vibrant, around it were many other stars.
I'm scared to skywatch. On one of my first families on Sims 2, I had the teenage son go out and stargaze within the first 5 minutes of his creation, and a few seconds later, he points at the sky and a giant satellite came crashing down and killed him. Scarred me for life.
Watching stars is pretty cool. They literary look like this while tripping, just more brighter and more clearer and no red lines:
I always love the skywatch when I'm on holiday somewhere else, but there aren't a lot of visible stars in the city.

It isn't.
Please tell me that isn't shooped.
It's not. I've seen it with my own eyes in NZ. It fucking kicked ass.
What the fuck, I want to see nebulae in the night :frown:
holy shit that's awesome, I wish I could see something like that :(
The Milky Way. Home. This stuff amazes me :allears:
This just in people. I bumped the thread. Also, saw venus with my spotting scope, it's beautiful. It's Quarter-Moon tonight, going to observe it :v:
Just recently went camping at the Grand Canyon, being no lights around the sky was lit up. Some of those most beautiful stuff I have ever seen. And OP you have one of my most favorite songs from The Beatles.
Actually this is a lot less cool than I first thought.
What? Do you expect to look up and see stars exploding left, right and centre? This is not a fireworks display. There is so much complexity involved in the universe (and beyond?) that we can't even begin to understand. If you came here to complain, we don't want you here.
Haven't really skywatched too much, but I take photos of the sky every now and then with asslong exposure times.
I live in the city so I don't get to see stars at night.

I would kill to be able to see a sky completely packed with stars like this.
Guys, I need some help on buying my first telescope. I've been browsing a lot, and I've stopped on the Orion SkyQuest XT6 Dobosian telescope. http://www.optcorp.com/product.aspx?pid=1-600-609-611-4296 Anonymous has already said that this would be good, but I want your guys opinion. Yes or No? If no suggest something else. None of that GoTo shit please.
This is way too far back in the threads. I've recently bought a Skywatcher N150, Nice dobson, very good quality. Got my first messier objects with it too. M31, M13. Even the Double Cluster and Jupiter.

I saw Jupiter through binoculars a while ago. Just looks like a bright dot, but I could see one of its moons (checked later on Stellarium and apparently it was Ganymede) :swoon:
And now the most amazing of nebulae: The Pillars of Creation (Link'd for size) (I know it's not strictly skywatching, unless you consider the Hubble Telescope skywatching. But it's the Pillars of Creation, and it deserves a post in every thread. Deal with it.)
That's awesome..

Couldn't find a good place in europe where to buy an XT6, so I got an N150 instead. Awesome scope, read above you.
is it normal that when i'm alone in the night and i'm looking at the night sky and lying on the ground, i start to get nervous and unpleasant? i try to ignore it but it just gets stronger and the longer i do it, i start to pay more attention to my surroundings, the noises and so on... eventually i will start to look at the windows of the houses or trees and bushes to make sure there's nobody around but i still feel like i'm not alone :tinfoil: then i just run away
