Fuck it. I'll admit, I'm talking out of my ass. Okay? Satisfied?
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.
lol
Budget $10 million
Gross revenue $1,677,000

No problem! Someone should get a good philosophy thread going anyway. I'm down, how about you?
I just don't want to ruin this thread with a flame war.
I spent a month reading this piece of shit book. What I got from it is cool to rape women if you think they like you (because, let's face it, you're probably right); anyone who believes in charity is a pathetic creature that, if given power, would know so little about how to use power that they would run everything possible into the ground; you can have a man take responsibility for creating a weapon designed to enslave his peers if you just look at him and tell him it's really not a bad thing; appreciating someone as a businessman is actually the same thing as being in a physical relationship, and your best friends will understand that if you have sex with all three of them; those same people that are into charity are also massive idiots who are really good at denying reality, and they have absolutely no understanding of how anything works, nor will they listen to experts on an issue; people will kill themselves and hundreds of others without hesitation if told to by their superiors at work; a three-hour-long rant over the radio is all it takes to turn an entire nation to your side; those same charity people will torture a man to death for fun...
Seriously, there's 1,500 pages of this shit. Read it and you will finally see just how crazy libertarians are.
[editline]AUTOMERGE BROKEN[/editline]
Oh, also: I did get what it was TRYING to do. I know it's a work of hyperbole, but the underlying concepts just don't work.
I thought Atlas Shrugged the book was shit back when I was an Objectivist.
I will not be seeing this.
^Automerge broken, look up two posts.^
But what about the movie itself? There’s no big name actors (unless you count genre actor Armin Shimerman from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Deep Space Nine”) and a very small budget. Yet a story told from the point of view that rich guys are trying to save society while an apathetic government is content to let it lapse into ruin is itself highly unusual and does make one think. This is a thought-provoking film that asks you to use your brains instead of enduring explosions, car chases, and weapons fire, meaning that, by definition, it was never intended to be a mainstream film. The director, Paul Johansson, is himself credited for playing the mysterious John Galt, not to mention that this is part one of three (as the book is reportedly 1100 pages.) For what they had to work with and what was accomplished, the film succeeds in creating heroes of the main characters, making the mystery of John Galt’s designs and motivations compelling, and most importantly, setting up the remaining two parts of the trilogy.
(a three skull recommendation out of four)
I just got back from this movie, I thought it was great. Just because you don't agree with the views on this movie or book for that matter, doesn't mean you have to make a horrible OP about it.
I liked the movie, you can entertain ideas without accepting them.

Ok, that's your own opinion, I will neither condemn, nor condone you for it. What I see in it, is a character driven to work his ass off, is brought down, and that resonates with me because it inspires me to do the best I can. That's all I'm going to say.

it inspires me to hate people who carry this book around as if it were some bible
all that needs to happen is that they should team with mormons and then the fun REALLY starts

You all right, boyo? First time Plasmid's a real kick from a mule. But ... there's nothing like a fistful of lightning, now is there?
it's a novel that is basically the libertarian bible. Themes include how poor people are weak and do not deserve to live, how women should be subservient to men, how the government hates people who are good at anything, and how rape is awesome.
These ideals seem unnecessarily animalistic. Although a great deal of what we are today can be attributed to natural selection, it seems pointless to depend on the weak dying rather than improving the lives of everyone.

Actually, that's one the OP got wrong. The hate is for people who are poor due to apathy. It actually praises those who are poor but work to better their situation. The real hate/love has nothing to do with how well off you are and everything to do with your personal philosophy and whether or not you actually practice it.

The problem is who gets to be the judge of who is a hard worker and who is lazy? In practice, almost all Objectivists are already rich and answer that question with "if they were inventive and hard workers they wouldn't still be poor," so it becomes kind of circular reasoning.
"and that's why there should be no libraries, social services, or public schools"
Exactly. I didn't say it was a good philosophy, I was just saying it as it was.
Yeah my bad I didn't read your earlier post HEH

I know you are not endorsing the ideals but it seems to still place burden on those who are unable to help themselves fully.
I believe most mammals go against this in some way with nurturing their offspring. Natural selection defeating itself.

So everyone who leans towards the libertarian side of the political spectrum jerks off to Ayn Rand?

You can't really laud a movie that's based on a book for its plot.
[editline]19th April 2011[/editline]
It makes no sense.

I mock the reviewer for pretty much using the "It's supposed to be like a made for TV film" argument.

If I were at all hateful I would be trying to get a flame war going. I'd rather be a wimp and prove my own point. Maybe it doesn't inspire you, but it most certainly inspires me. I don't have a religion, but I have the inspiration of philosophy in general. Friedrich Nietzsche- Thus Spoke Zarathrustra inspires me too. PM me if you wanna hear any others.

I am not even sure what the original post was meant to be about after shamefully checking a dictionary.
All I learned in English class was that Communism doesn't work.
why did you learn that in English class

My bad bro. I shouldn't have started this. But something good came out of it. I'm proving that I'm willing to take responsibility for my own actions, no matter what the circumstances are. That's what Ayn Rand taught me (among other things). Proceed with the thread now.
why did you learn that in English class
Because Animal Farm and Lord of the flies are wanked off for interpretation rather than actual grammar.
Wanked off so hard and vigorously in fact that it is moving at a slower than the relative speed of the rest of the world.
Let me tell you why this is a metaphor for Stalin's take over.
Yes, I looked it up with google before posting just to make sure.

Okay because your post could have gone either way
the other guy's could not have, however
Never read Atlas Shrugged, but I did make the mistake of downloading "Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal" in audio-book format. Best sleep-aid I've ever had.
And I somehow doubt a trilogy of Atlas Shrugged would be any better. Lord of the Rings had a trilogy too but then it was also comprised of 3 books, so that tells me right there that Atlas Shrugged is going to spend inane amounts of time yammering on about miscellaneous details.
