Welp. Back in the saddle looking for AWD sedans/coupes in my area that aren't ridiculous, and.... fuck me.......
I guess it's Early 2000s Subaru Baja because nostalgia, or mid 2000s domestic and hope I find an ok Ford somewhere....
I forgot how expensive awd is here for no real reason.
What about a Jag X-type AWD? Around here they're practically being given away but iirc they're extremely well reviewed.

probably due to expensive parts.
Does unsprung weight actually matter all that much for performance? I get that it theoretically should a bit, but the one (not sure if biased) study by Lotus Engineering says it doesn't matter.
My 205/55r16 Firestone Winterforces weigh 23 lbs each. They are mounted on 17.5 lb 16" OEM wheels.
195/50r15 Toyo R1Rs weigh 20 lbs. They can be mounted on cheapo Sparco Trofeo wheels weighing 14 lbs.
Would losing (7*4)=28 pounds off of unsprung weight really make that significant of a difference or should I stop memeing and get junkyard steelies for autocross because I only make 80 horsepower anyway?
Nothing like a Monday drive.

Finally washed it, really need to fix the headlights lol

I've never understood people who washed their cars in the winter.
The instant you leave the driveway it's gonna be filthy by the time you reach the main road.

Where the roads get salted it helps though

I mostly just try to get the salt off and do a healthy undercarriage wash, fuck the road salt.

Basically all I'm finding for less than $15k is junkyard 2010s, 2000-20003 Subarus with 160k miles, or trucks with 300k miles ranging from 1995 to 2010.

Let's see... That black plug back there with yellow and black should be 12v ACC and ground.
I see tan/grey pair and darkgreen/lightgreen.. those are front speaker pairs.
The orange wire the twist cap is on is probably would constant 12v.
Rears would be darkblue/lightblue and yellow/brown, but I don't see those in there.

Damn, I've been living in BC for so long I've forgotten that the underdeveloped world still uses salt on the roads. Sorry about that.

It doesn't get salted here, but it rains so infrequently that the roads and everything will be dry tomorrow anyway.

We barely use salt in BC either. It's mainly just sand. Most of the cars around here I see with rust have plates from out east.

Yeah, they use some sand/lava rock mix here that won't corrode, but gets the car filthy if I take it skiing.

Most studies equate 1lb of unsprung to 7lbs of sprung or so. IE take off 20 lbs, the car will act as if 140lbs were removed.
I noticed a big difference going from 23lb steels to 16.5lb alloys on my Impreza.

We actually lead the world in road surface research... so theres that. I'll take salt on the roads until they find a better alternative
I haven't seen snow in 7+ years, and it's never been bad enough that people can't drive :v:

God bless the CA DMV, moderating our license plates so only gems like this one get put on cars

I don't know what's worse, the blatant furry bullshit or the leopard print seat covers.
:terrists:
Is working on cars something y'all do for a living or is it just a hobby for some of you?
Oh god the leopard skin seat covers! :disgust:
Little of column a, mostly column b for my understanding.
I'm here because I'm laughably amateur and want to get to know how to do this stuff so I can save money and eventually teach my kids, if I ever have any, how to do it.

Its a hobby by necessity, not choice
Is working on cars something y'all do for a living or is it just a hobby for some of you?
mostly b. I have very unfortunate tastes in cars that often leads me to buying the worst piles of shit on the road and cramming an extra 200 horsepower in them, irrespective of what the original power was. yall should have seen my old turbo metro. that was one of those deals where for every block you drove it 2 things broke, but it happily ate the front tires (and clutches, gearboxes, etc.) and made mustang owners cry so I loved it
What do you mean by this?
Too cheap to pay the labor of a mechanic but also need a vehicle that can be driven daily. And before you know it you learn way too much
I fix cars because I'm good at it and I like to fix shit. I just kinda get how stuff works after a bit of time fooling with it, hence why I can fix most of the stuff on a car.
I don't touch euro stuff though, over engineering at its best.

First and only VW Fox I ever found was in Harrisbug, PA while getting dinner and groceries with, go figure, a fox furry.
