what do you do to get a car that's been sitting for 2 years to start? change battery, replace fluids, refill tires? it's a 98 grand cherokee that ran fine before it sat so i imagine no need to chank spark plugs n shit right? i've read you should turn the crank manually to distribute after oil change but that sounds like a bunch of god dang hogwash to me
I start cheap with a bottle of ether to see if it even tries to start, and if it fires I then go replacing fluids and tires. if it doesn't fire I start going through compression and ignition checklists

Attempt to crank her. If she fires good dont let her run for more than 3 seconds. Proccede to change fluids and drain gas tank. and everything else you can imagine. (You can drive on thoes fluids for less than 2 miles but would like to see you pour a bottle of MMO in the oil to make it alittle..... thin... and to start the cleaning process.) Only reason they say crank by hand is to see if shes free, you cannot generate oil pressure using a wrench. If she does not cough, report back list too long.

For comparison, my friend just picked up a clean, rust free, automatic for $3800 (or was it $3700? I forget) with about 80,000 miles. That one has half the miles and is a 5 speed. Worth $2500 more? Your call. A Miata is a great, great fun car, though. If it's super clean they're easy to keep going for the most part.
My TPS kept throwing codes so I ordered a new one. Rained yesterday, but cleared up today so I decided to go out and replace it. Started working both bolts loose, then pop. The head popped off the screw. I touched the second screw and it's head fell off. Fucking kidding me.

I just popped one of those bastards getting a panel off under my steering column to pull the harness enabling dark mode on my vic, so I guess I did something today.
What you think? Good deal? https://cnj.craigslist.org/cto/5781369419.html
If you want a showroom clean NA 90' 1.6, go for it. Cars like this are worth as much as someone will pay for them. I like the NB more personally, and there's a few things which have to be fixed with the early 90-91 NA's along with other quirks and problems. I wouldn't buy a car like that though unless you intend to keep it in similar condition since it looks like it could almost be a collectors car.

Just as rust free (RARE for NH) But the paint wasn't quite as clean, and it was a mild salvage (front bumper/fender). But it did come with leather seats instead of cloth and it had 4-2-1 headers (I think Racing Beat) and a Borla catback exhaust. Even still, I think $5,500 would've been the ideal price, but I'm not jelly. That one should probably be ideally in that range too, like $5,600-$5,800. But even the $6k range isn't robbery. But again, ideally, for the same car to truly cost that price, it should have a hardtop and maybe a couple mods like a rollbar or exhaust, in my opinion. In short, go for it. Who freaking knows, the prices might jump in the coming years.

Managed to burn my arm, but all seems to be well. Reset the pcu and let it idle for a while. I'll go for a drive tomorrow to let it finish it's setup. Pulling the harness activating dark mode didn't seem to work. Still no interior lights when I open my doors. :(
More welding today. I cut some panels to fill the big holes and welded em up. I started using a hole saw.. but that failed quickly. Back to the trusty grinder. I didn't want to weld because I figured I'd catch the carpet / insulation on fire and burn the whole project to the ground.
Not when whatever they are in rusts or gets chowed out, then the fuckin thing just spins and spins with no way to secure it.
quick and easy, just drop a tack weld on it.
Front brake fluid ran out on my truck, drove ~40 miles using just the rear brakes. Refilled, found no leaks. Bled it, brakes feel better than they have in a long time.
Front brakes are just for looks. No one needs them!
Front brakes are just for looks. No one needs them!
When your rear brakes are larger than the average Honda wheel, you can generally do fine with just back brakes. (13" ID, 15" OD drum, 7" wide)
I finally got around to replacing the crushed ac condenser on my car, and I learned two things: 1: its not integrated with the trans cooler, its integrated with the engine oil cooler, and Ive got no fuckin clue where the trans cooler is. 2: I ordered the wrong ac condenser, this one doesnt have the thermo-valve for the oil cooler. Silly me now paying attention. [editline]14th September 2016[/editline] That brings up something, im still surprised at how running engines on gasoline vapor still doesnt get any attention from anyone, and when it does, its quickly dismissed as conspiracy theory bullshit like GEET engines. I had my minibike running on gas vapor for a while, and while I dont have the equipment to test emissions, I can definitely say that the exhaust smelled a lot cleaner than running on a carb. I never got around to testing mpg change either, because the old engine ran too shitty to make it 3 miles down the road, on vapor or carb. Maybe Ill build another version to put on the 212 so I can finally test that.
Just an FYI, mazda are speculated to be using HCCI on their new "RX9" which has been approved to begin engineering and later on, manufacturing as a turbocharged rotary unit. [editline]19th September 2016[/editline] Also speculated that the engine will sit upside down with the turbo units on top and the intakes under, according to new patents

I MIGHT have found the holy grail. By some stupid luck I met this guy who still has a very new S54B32 engine (E46 M3 engine) He has all the parts I need, but it does have a tick. He's only asking 2000eur for it. The sound could be a lifter, or in the worst case a bearin brass? In which case the crankshaft is also fucked. :suicide: [editline]19th September 2016[/editline] I mean just look how clean that thing is
that sounds worse than a lifter. nothing holy grail about this.
that sounds worse than a lifter. nothing holy grail about this.
bmw engines can sound really bad, my 320 sounded like that just from using the wrong oil :v: Either way, I'm running this past some people who have a shit ton of experience with this type to see if it's worth it.
Probably the most fun I've ever had driving, by far, and it's also insanely reliable compared to my old Camaro. I've already put ~2700 miles on it since I bought it, most of which is just cruising around. Although it does like to shit the bed every now and then and not idle, tho I'm pretty sure it's the fuel pump on its way out the door. She's coming together very nice, just a few more finishing touches to be done. [editline]16th September 2016[/editline] Also did I mention that my brother bought one too? Wait a second, are you in the northeast US? I swear I saw a post on one of the US MR2 groups for Bear Mountain or something with red and blue MK1s. I'm still waiting on my motor to get done, didn't have time with the new job to rebuild the "new" motor I bought from Prime for my '86, so I have to sit on my hands until my mechanic is done :( Hopefully this winter, I'll have it painted and with the good motor in it! Mine was originally that red so I've been debating going back to the stock red or going with a nice dark glossy black.
The ticking frequency (as in rhythm) seems to line up with valve tick, but it sounds much more severe. Bent valve due to piston having a rendezvous with valves?
