Aswell as all the other protective gear (boots, gloves, pants, jacket)
say goodbye to your skin if you decide to ride around with shorts and shirt.
After I heard about this chick who had a crash on her moped in jeans and had to pick the jeans out of her wound... Yeah, I vowed never to ride in jeans again. Nowadays you can get gear that looks just like regular clothes, I even used my motorcycle jacket as my daily hoody until I lost it.
I learned to ride on one of these:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/SKDaOic.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/wmQHmCJ.jpg[/t]
Balance was ezpz, controlling thrust was ezpz, and riding it, even on the expressway or the freeway was super simple and smooth as silk. The real hitch is I'm pretty much retarded and can't figure out how to take off from a stop. I'll almost always stall 3 times before I take off, and it's mostly because I'm white-knuckle, ball-sweating, teeth clenching afraid of whiskey throttling it. I loved it to death the sum total... 8 times I rode it?
It cost 3300, I gave it to my co-worker for christmas when he totalled his own bike and was without a commuter. I dropped it once when I misjudged the side slope to a hill I was stopping on outside my house. Now I'm looking for an 80's CB250 or a nighthawk or something. I'm too light for a 900 pound fucking bike.
Do not learn on a liter bike. I bought it on the premise that I'd practice all the time and eventually use it to save gas while working patrols, but it didn't work out.
And yeah, do the MSF course. I loved it, and it will save your life.

Reminds me, I should really gift my gf a driving course. Like one where they wet a test track and have her learn to control the car.
I work in the traffic management industry, and this is generally false. While there are many forms of detection, the two most prevalent are video and inductive loops. The loops are obvious - big circles in the lane. Try and stay centered on one and rev the motor to like 5k and hold it there for 10 seconds, usually does the trick. As for video detection, just wave your hands above your head or flap your arms.
There's is something to be said about old/broken systems. The traffic light at Blossom Hill and Winfield in my city has been running on a fallback timer for two years now.

I got a friend of mine into riding last summer, and he went straight from me teaching him to ride on my 250 dirtbike to riding the 77 GL1000 I fixed up for him. That thing rides like a wildabeast. When it came out it was both the heaviest production bike and the fastest production bike. Hes only dumped it once, and that was the other day, he took it up the the gas station to put some air in the tires, and the neutral indicator light is busted, so he dropped the clutch in first and hit an ice patch.
Him and my fiance are going to take the MSF together this summer. The fiance wants to get a bike , and likes the look of bobber maxims and magnas, but also wants a comfy ride. Ive got my work cut out for me here.

Upper middle class people are some of the most infuriating. I was shooting the shit with some sheriffs who came to get me to move my RV and they said they hate the neighborhood I was parked near because the middle aged soccer moms did nothing but complain about the slightest thing, and the sheriffs would have gladly let me park there for weeks if not for h ecomplaints.

I've always had a little dislike of the idea of European roads when I watch dash-cams of people over yonder and there isn't much space on the side of the roads (One of the gun guys I watch was towing his boat to a lake in CA and apparently they have this problem there as well, so maybe it's not a Euro thing at all)
..But what do you do if you're having car trouble and need to pull over? It seems like you're either blocking traffic or are close as hell to the side of a possibly busy road.

Since we're on the topic of bikes, here's the first picture of my 690!
[t]http://i.imgur.com/tdLX7rC.jpg[/t]
Got a new handlebar for it yesterday, went to put it on and realized my old one was perfectly fine. Doh! Turns out the bolt holding the handlebar clamp on was bent. Ordered a new one today.
Today I received a big box of goodies from a dealer, and a smaller package from the UK:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/1vVnRbW.jpg[/t]
And inside the KTM box:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/gqHpEIj.jpg[/t]
Full list:
[t]http://i.imgur.com/3trAnYY.jpg[/t]
Didn't get a pic of the UK package, but it was a new clutch master cylinder with (surprisingly) a Zeta lever! I was expecting a stock lever, but the slightly shorter Zeta is a nice surprise. Some say it doesn't work on the clutch sensor though, so I might have to swap over the stock lever.
Put new crashpads on, finally got the exhaust on proper, and this can is huge!

Just temporary until I get my Akrapovic slip-on though, but much better than just the header. Hoping the new bolts come in on Friday, I'll do an oil change, put coolant in it and take it for a quick test ride hopefully, if the weather permits! So incredibly excited.
Birdmans super simple motorcycle survival guide. In order of importance:
Wear helmet. Accept that you look like a nerd wearing it and get a tinted faceshield to hide your shame.
Pay attention. Watch for dumb entitled cagers who look tlike theyre about to turn into your lane without looking.
Always be ready to react. A couple times ive just about gotten hit, and i didnt realize what happened until after i had reflexively avoided the situation and deployed the finger. This is the correct procedure.
Dont drive like a tool. About once a month in the summertime here there is a motorcyclist who dies in a crash. Not to speak ill of the dead but most of the time the deceased was riding his crotchrocket way too fast in shorts and sandals with no helmet and merging without looking and using blinkers.
USE BLINKER. see above.
Slow down in rain. You hydroplane, and you will experience road rash.
Remove muffler. Loud pipes get you noticed. If you mention this on the internet, people will cross hell itself to argue with you.
Special ammendment for californians:
Despite living in a communist land, your overlords have seen fit to legalize lanesplitting. Use this. Ive heard that around 60% of bike accidents are from getting rear ended. You cant get rear ended if you are inbetween cars.
[editline]14th February 2017[/editline]
Yea, i admit sportbike 250s are a different game altogether, and have plenty of get up n go, but pretty much any other style of 250, ie dirtbike, dualsport, touring, standard, cruiser, especially older ones, are too slow to be practical on the interstate, and in some cases, even 65mph highways.
[editline]14th February 2017[/editline]
Dont get me wrong i love my xr250 to bits, but it tops out anywhere between 60 and 80 depending on grade, weight, and wind.
What do you recommend for somebody who is mostly interested in tracking bikes. I'm a good enough driver to avoid accidents of my own causing, so I believe I won't ride like a dickmunch either. But still, I simply don't see much sense in trying to have fun everyday on the street when I can just fully enjoy my hypothetical bike on the track.
Anyway, I have no riding experience, although I wouldn't be surprised if I can get the basics down in a quick timeframe. I also imagine I'm best off starting on the street anyway, because how else will I learn?
I don't really have a trailer or towing vehicle, but I honestly think I could fit a bike in my mama's Honda Odyssey. I'm sure the same thing applies to bikes as with cars in that you could still drive it to and from a track, but then you lose storage space for food/water and tools. So in my mind, it just makes sense to trailer a bike in some form.
It's still only an idea, but I keep telling myself I should buy a bike after I graduate school. I have know idea if I'll have money for it though with all the Miata shit I get involved in.

Take your MSF before you think any further into it. You'd be amazed at how fun street riding is, and it makes every commute that much more enjoyable. I have zero desire to track any of the bikes I've owned.
anything over 650cc on a road course is boring is the only real advice I can give you about track bikes. similarly, anything under 1000cc on an oval is boring unless it's a dirt oval, in which case about 500cc is the sweet spot
anything over 650cc on a road course is boring is the only real advice I can give you about track bikes. similarly, anything under 1000cc on an oval is boring unless it's a dirt oval, in which case about 500cc is the sweet spot
Is that because of weight and not being able to corner as hard? Also, I've never ever heard of bikes on oval tracks. Gonna have to look on youtube for that one.

What do you mean by "road course"?
[editline]16th February 2017[/editline]
Depends how well versed he is on riding on the road, I'd been driving for 7 years when I passed my bike test so I went all in and got a 1200 triumph. If you can anticipate the road ahead well enough you can ride it pretty gently until you figure out what you're doing. In general I'd say not to be intimidated by bigger engine bikes and if you can pick up something like a 9 or 10 year old yamaha fazer (fz6) I reckon you'd be golden.
Sure, but you had 7 years of experience. Prior to me riding motorcycles, the closest thing I had to experience was riding a quad, which got me accustomed to hand/foot clutch/shift. When I bought the 250, got it running, and rolled out of my driveway, that was my first time actually being on a motorcycle, and I'm glad it was a 250, because that Ninja was plenty powerful for a first bike. I rode it for 6 months, took the MSF feeling like I knew everything, only to realize I knew jack shit and how lucky I was to be alive.
It's been 5 years now and I've never owned a bike that went faster than 0-60 in 6 seconds until this Ninja 500, which is 4.5 seconds, and it's plenty fast for my tastes. I still have a Suzuki Bandit 1200 lined up for $800 from a family friend, but tbh, chances are I'm going to sell it simply because I don't need that much power. The 500 can already outpace most sports cars, so what's the point? Not to mention insurance in CA leaps when you buy anything above a liter bike. Right now I pay $20/mo for insurance on the 500, that would jump to $50/mo with the Bandit, and in all likelihood get me in all sorts of trouble simply because I lack self control when it comes to power, and I'm okay with admitting that.
Is that because of weight and not being able to corner as hard? Also, I've never ever heard of bikes on oval tracks. Gonna have to look on youtube for that one.
thats the gist of it. there are big engined bikes that don't weigh much but they're expensive ducatis and whatnot. something more typical like a gsxr 1000 or god forbid a hayabusa is shit
bikes on dirt ovals is called flat tracking and on paved ovals is fucking rad
What do you mean by "road course"?
road course is the thing other than paved ovals and drag strips that people think of when you say "race track". think laguna seca, sonoma raceway, nordschleife. brands hatch, etc.
[editline]16th February 2017[/editline]
basically a paved closed circuit course with turns that don't go only left

Ordered an Annke X8 dash cam from well rated seller
Arrives
Open box
Only thing inside is camera and manual
This was going to be my first camera upgrade in ~4 years now, hate dealing with returns.
Can say this, the camera feels very sturdy and hefty. Looks very professional. If it works, i might try for 50% return and keep it.

You're gonna have to do some fabrication for mounts and maybe driveshaft.
Also this is quite insane.

Yeah, Id figured a lot of Foxbody people would absolutely hate me. But I wanted to do something unique and stumbled upon that. It has the 2.3 in it anyways and putting a v8 in it would probably be the same amount of work.

As long as you're aware of all the potential fabrication needed.
Also take ecu and dash cluster wiring into consideration.

Rock Auto has some for $75+$50 core that I'll probably actually do. Steering is starting to slip on corners at speed. Its a one day project to get the old off and the new on.
This is the most significant issue, of 3 total, that I have with the Blazer. Its going to be sold/scrapped hopefully by year end
