Get a OBD tester on it. And I bet what they mean by 'valve issues' is that it probably has some variable valve adjustment system that can act funny. My mother's Toyota had the same problem, turns out the valve responsible for controlling the variable valve timing (yo dawg...) were clogged up with soot from the engine oil. The only time that shitheap has ever turned on the CEL.

How reliable are late 90s early 00's BMWs? I've got a 13 Mustang 5.0 that I want to keep clean and low miles and I've always liked BMWs, so I'm thinking about getting a 740 from that era. But I need it to be reliable enough to go on 4 hour road trips. I know some can be gimmicky with electronics but are the motors solid? I only have exprence with American cars.
You want a beater/road trip car with a 4 liter engine? And the 7 series are basically tiny limos, go for a 3 or 5 series.
You want a beater/road trip car with a 4 liter engine? And the 7 series are basically tiny limos, go for a 3 or 5 series.
I take my mustang out every where and it has a 5.0 lol. I mean like I've found tons of nice 3 series out there.
Bulletproof straight 6s, not-so-bulletproof VANOS, cooling system, subframes, and window regulators. Still great cars though, and I still see myself one day owning a 3 series, maybe even an M3 if I'm devoted enough and feel it's time to move on from the Miata. Might be tricky for me to find an especially clean example in my parts though. Lots of daily driven examples. German cars in general are just more demanding/finicky with preventative maintenance. If you follow the general mileage guidelines, most owners get away with quite reliable Bimmers. I like to direct people seriously interested in buying them to buyer's guides such as this one for e46's. Helped me identify a lot of shit, and lead me to not buying one. For now.

To anyone who read when I was having the headlight issue. After reading into it more, I figured out that the bulbs themselves can be replaced, and that's what broke cable-wise. I ordered a pack of two for my front, and I'll spend some time on Tuesday when they're supposed to arrive replacing them. I still need to clean my headlights, but can only do it by hand, so I may try one of those kits by Meguiar. $30.00 and I can share some before and after pics.
It's always good to change your headlight fluid. So far the most baffling this has been my car and my cousins car where you have to take off the bumber to change the bulbs. I've become a fucking harry potter with this shit changing the bulbs in my shitroen is so.. shit

I like the kits though since they give you resurfacing tools, which essentially is sanding off the oxidized/dirty layer that is causing issues.

My cousin bough toyota for fun.. You have to take the headlight out. Not only out but twist it so that it makes breaking noises. then twist the bumber

Especially since they give you different types, and it's pretty hard to mess up.
What do you plan on doing to the floor exactly? I'm gonna start working on the Pinto again sometime soon, and the floor is pretty rough, so I just want some tips on that.
Start by investigation. Pull the carpets out and get any sounded deadening shit cleaned away like I did in those pics. Then it's time to start wire wheeling. If you have a bunch of surface rust it'll knock it down to bare metal. If it's actually rot it'll start to eat holes in the rotten area. In the rotten areas chop it all out and weld in new floors. You can almost assuredly purchase entire punched and formed floor boards ready to weld in from a supplier. It's fairly easy that way, even if the whole floor is gone! For the areas that aren't rotten through, just pitted, clean the metal thoroughly until it's free of rusties. Then treat all effected areas with something that's meant to seal/ stop rust. I use a lot of POR15, personally. On mine I'm planning to wire wheel the entire floor pans and then treat with POR15. I've had to cut out a 4"x4" square where one of the floor plugs began to rot out, but that should be the only cutting that the floor will need on mine. Then I'll finish with a healthy covering of POR15 and the floor should be good as long as it doesn't see more winters. Speaking of floors, Tonight I hit up the floor boards on the Celica with a wire wheel. Got about 2/3 done before my wire wheel ran out of wires. They were all in my skin, so it seemed. Then I went inside and decided to see what I'm working with on the rustiest rear quarter window frame. Bleak. Another case of a broken ribbon cable. I found this online for $15 so I think I'm gonna pick it up, solder it on, and maybe have a successful repair on a nice oldschool radio! Kind of offset by the rest of the car desperately trying to die and crawl back into hell with your wallet in tow. Expensive to fix the eventual things that pop-up if you take it to the shop to have someone else do it. At work, we only fool around with the basics like oil changes, light installs, tire replacement, and etc. on them. It's nothing insanely difficult, but it can get fairly frustrating to diddle around with even that as compared to anything else (this goes for most eurojunk in general, though). Then again, if I was doing it at home at my own pace it wouldn't be too big of a deal considering it isn't holding up a line of other shit when I have it parked in my garage. Anything after that is the type of stuff I wouldn't even want to bother doing. I've watched a few repair vids, and talked to guys that have messed with them, and it all sounds like a massive headache waiting to happen. It's a shame, I really like most BMW products on the surface, but I feel like I would be dreading them breaking down more than I would be enjoying the ~~Ultimate Driving Experience~~ tl;dr yeh nah get and ls400 if you want a comfy V8 car to take long trips in. It eliminates most of the cons that come with those types of vehicles.
God the early 90's LS400 was/is such a phenomenal car. They're gorgeous and they feel like a car 5 years newer than when they came out, at least. 90's BMWs have absolute shit interiors. They were probably great for the first 5 years, but they fall apart like nobody's business. Their window regulators seem to be especially problematic. I've fixed my flatmate's 318ti's windows too many times to count. Then they stay on track for a couple weeks and break again. I've tried everything I can think of on them. Seems like I'm not the only one fighting the good fight. But, when they're running well and if you get one that ISN'T falling apart they drive wonderfully. Great drivetrains.

But, 15 years later, you can't find decently-priced ones that haven't been treated like shit and dogged the hell out of, at least that's the story in my area. Most of them have been absolutely trashed by the hoodrat kings who bought them for the badge recognition and have been beating around in them hard for the past ten years with as much of the very essential basic maintenance avoided for one reason or another. Not exactly something I'd want to own. The ones in good shape are high as hell for what you get, or aren't being sold at all since they're in the hands of an actual enthusiast. The saying goes something like "Don't buy a used luxury vehicle if you couldn't afford to buy a new one" or something similar? I think? It goes double so for something like a BMW, or Benz, etc.
I've heard of them, but that's $300-500 down at most places. Something that, while i could afford it, it's too expensive right now. I did it with Capital One, and they should (hopefully) be giving me back my deposit soon. With Capital One you could put like $100, and they'll give you a $200 limit. Honestly just anything to build your credit. Not more than a year later I got accepted for a Discover Card, and my credit is still growing. Just paying off the statement balance every time, and using only up to 30% of my available credit. It's just gonna take time.
Ran credit reports, literally the only things on them were from when my credit was just checked trying to get loans. No debts, nothing bad nor good.
Well. You can have the same issue I have, I have a giant lien against me from JP morgan and literally get denied for even opening up a bank account for anyone due to the red flag. It could be the same case bias to you, plus they don't show up on a credit check. Honestly, I do believe anyone here can help you, you have the exact same issue I have but I know what caused mine, but I have not ever looked into fixing my issue.
After spending time with the E320 I've found a few issues but all seem to be the common issues that I've heard. The blower motor regulator seems to have shit itself, a window regulator is faulty on the drivers side, and one of the door switches is probably faulty as the dome lights don't come on when a door is opened. Also a couple of the cluster lights are out but I already have the dash pullers from when I had to change the bulbs on the ML's cluster. I'm probably a masochist so bring on the pain Benz.
