anywhere solid. I usually jack up the control arms, means you don't need to jack it up a mile when you're working on an offroader
Can someone here suggest what points would be good for placing a jack on a 2000 Ford Taurus? I have some work I want to do but I've never had to bring it off the ground before (i've got a floor jack to use now). I have a shitty pic but this is the best I can get of the front. I was thinking of using the subframe but i've heard so many people say when they tried it bent it. [t]http://i.imgur.com/qPEGFHZ.jpg[/t]
If you want to lift it via the subframe, then place the jack so it lifts it AT the huge bolts holding the subframe to the body. It's when you lift between those bolts in the middle of the subframe that you bend it.

I don't want to have the jack sitting right on the bolt unless it's ok to do so.

Preferably something that ain't hardwood, so it'll 'give' instead of damaging bolt or subframe.
Recently my PT Cruiser GT has been misfiring. I've already fixed the issue once but it has since returned. Last week it started to act up only under boost and slowly turned into misfiring at idle and backfiring on startup. On the way to diagnosing the issue I found out the last guy to work on the car JB welded a vacuum line onto the intake. So I drilled out the hole that was left and tapped it was 1/8" NPT thread and stuck a 1/8" NPT to 3/8" barb in there with some thread sealant and hose clamped the line on. I also changed out the spark plugs and ignition coil and plugs with one from the junkyard off of another GT Pic1 Pic2. For 90% of the time it never through a code, I had to throw it in 2nd gear and floor it up a 15 degree incline hill at full throttle for a code to stick. It gave me a p0300, multiple misfires on multiple cylinders, so I figured it was ignition. That fixed the issue! Ever since I did that it has been idling WAY smoother. However it seems like it never hit 12.5psi of boost any more, not sure what was up with that. Now it's a week later and it has started back up today. Not sure why! I don't want to just start throwing more parts back at it as the coil cost me $40. Plus it's just a general pain to get to the ignition system on these cars. On a maybe related note, the cassette player in the car is VERY staticy and the radio is slightly too, maybe a ground issue that is also burning up coils? Not sure. What do you guys think?
Late, but I'd stay as far away from that particular Magnum as I could. The way they completely mess up those notes like that's not that great, the powertrain is trouble at higher mileage on the LX platforms, and the reviews on the dealership are purrrrrrfect. Beyond that, I hope you find something you like as a replacement, but that one I'd say is probably a nah. Have you considered an Impala SS or a newer Taurus? Both can be found in AWD, though the SS is a lot harder to find in AWD.
swan neck spoilers weirded me out i understand it's about safety concerns, but it looks strange
Never heard anything about safety features for them, but I have heard they are suppose to be more aero focused, as the argument goes that the aerodynamics are more important from underneath than on top. So in that case, getting the mounting brackets out of the way sort of speak from underneath, it supposedly makes for better aero. I only know this listening to some in-detail video about the Audi R8 LMS/Ultra, and maybe one or two other GT3 cars. There seems to be a lot of cars that sort of contradict this though, at list strictly going by their aerofoil. Underneath the car is always flat, with one or two minor aero designs.

I did find this though. http://loz.craigslist.org/cto/5764703317.html Looks good to me. Trying to get more info on it.
I think it goes without saying, but for some reason Dodge owners seem to love Cold Air Intakes as if they're super massive power boosts or something. Check it out really good and make sure they didn't do a poor install. I've seen and heard of several new Dodge owners find they have ignition and mileage problems from their new-to-them cars from people not really knowing what they were doing. I don't know about other cars, but it seems like the LX platform is really kind of blah when it comes to intake. Also, check on the electrical good if you can. I know my Charger has a really, really weak passenger window motor. I only noticed the other day that if I raise both my front windows at the same time with my headlights on, the headlights will visually flicker from the lack of power with everything drawing together. As for the powertrain, the transmission is pretty solid. But at 115, let the oil and tranny warm real good and dog it some. If you feel any shuttering or jarring shifts, avoid it. The AWD system in them is hell of a lot of fun in the snow if you get snow down there a lot. I only got my car stuck once last winter on bald all-seasons going up the side of a mountain to do my paper route during the day just to see what it could do. It took 8" of snow on the front bumper about 600 yards up the hillside before it began spinning with traction control off. For me, that was a big concern going in to buying it not knowing what it could do, and I've been very happy. It's still no 26" lifted RAM, but it will definitely get you from A to B, and I'd be willing to go anywhere a truck could go in anything under about 6" of snow (the front end on the AWD v6 Charger is 6" off the ground on level terrain, an important thing to know).
My Charger has the window issue too. Same with the flickering. But yeah, I hate cold air intakes. So that's going bye bye for any car I get. The only aftermarket intake I would ever use is a ram air. But thanks for the info man. I forget that you have the AWD 3.5L. We don't get snow that much, but I'd rather have AWD than not if it is an option. It only decreases fuel economy by .5mpg. If anything at all.
If you swap those ugly wheels off, it'd actually look alright, but I think most white cars are ehhh when they're blank white. And that window deal sounds eerily similar to what was happening with our 300c, dunno if it was the same issue or not, though.
Yeah. In the newer '09 through present AWD systems it's actually 2wd predominantly and engages the clutch within the transfer when certain limits are met such as wipers, manual mode, and temperature. So it's even better and seamless. But my '08 really doesn't get bad mileage and it's nice to have. I've definitely had it save me a time or two in the rain when I was feeling squirrely, I will freely admit. I'd also try to reset that tune, honestly. At least if it has any hesitation or if anything just feels off. If that transmission doesn't feel the same as it felt in your Charger: Don't Get It. With the Hemi, your NAG1 is going to be your weak point on your powertrain, axles aside. And they're not worth being worried over. Because when they break, they will break badly. I'm kind of surprised that Lerlth's Pursuit is having the issues with a heavier duty alternator, but it's pretty notorious with Daimler's shoddy American branches that their QC on electronics was laughable. Hell, my switches 3/4 of the time get stuck open or close for no reason what so ever, so I'll randomly be driving down the road, it will have the signal to lower the window randomly and start to do so, and start flicking the light as the alternator kicks on and off.
I like cold air intakes. They DO work, but for best results, you have to get your ecu tuned. I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to wait, but I'm going to end up getting a cold air intake for my EcoBoost (separate tubes and filters for each turbo) and a tuner. I'm just waiting for the warranty to run out.
It depends on the vehicle. If the car has good airflow into the engine bay and the intake already, they don't. If it's cramped up tight, they can help a little. But we're still only talking a few not really noticeable ponies. Not 'oh my gawd, look at duh 400 hp honda motor now!!!!' Which reminds me of a fun conversation I had with a 'gearhead' last summer who had a riced out Civic who tried to argue his open headers was the reason his car made so much more power than mine.
Cold air is where it's at for cool noises, though.

I like the slightly improved throttle response on a naturally aspirated engine.
Which reminds me of a fun conversation I had with a 'gearhead' last summer who had a riced out Civic who tried to argue his open headers was the reason his car made so much more power than mine.
Hearing people argue this and using the term "backpressure" makes my eye twitch, my mouth foam, and sends me into an uncontrollable fit of rage. I could uncork the headers on my '06 GT and it would make 0 difference. Why? BECAUSE THE POWER IS DEPENDENT ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CAM AND THE PRIMARY TUBES OF THE HEADERS, NOT THE PARTS AFTER THE COLLECTOR! Once the gasses reach the collector, THEY NO LONGER SCAVENGE THE CYLINDER! Small/no valve overlap? Short primary tubes for more low end torque! Large valve overlap? Longer primary tubes for more top end horsepower! Boosted or nitrous? Doesn't matter as much because you're not reliant on the scavenging effect to cram more air into the cylinders! It's that simple! I'm sorry, I'm not yelling at you. Just the thought of that conversation gives me an aneurysm.
I've heard dumb shit like you lose the scavenging effect by running open exhaust on a turbo motor. :suicide:
I've heard dumb shit like you lose the scavenging effect by running open exhaust on a turbo motor. :suicide:
Well, this is a little more technical than most people will understand, but you can actually lose power by running open turbos, and it is scavenging, but not at the same point. Turbo systems don't scavenge from the cylinders. The cylinders are filled by the positive pressure of the turbos, not the vacuum of the engine/exhaust gasses. When the turbo is just starting, or if there is open exhaust, the gasses at the point of exit hit static air at normal pressure, which can slow the exiting gasses, which acts as a slight resistance to the turbo. However, by having some exhaust pipe coming out of the turbo, you're creating a tube with gas flowing in it. Any time you have a tube with something flowing in it, you're creating a vacuum at the beginning of the tube. So by having some piping on the exhaust of your turbo, the gasses exiting the pipe create a vacuum on the face of the turbo's exhaust outlet, pulling the gasses out of the turbo, taking away that resistance. It's not a super large amount, but enough to make a difference on a dyno. That's why for engines like the EcoBoost in my truck, people always suggest an actual tuned exhaust over larger or more open exhaust systems.
I might turn into a nomad within the week or so. Looking at RV's either self-propelled or bumper pull. Found a few good ones, but with my very constrained budget it appears I get bottom of the barrel sub 3k deer lease specials. I found a nice 92 Toyota Dolphin but I have an odd feeling the interior is almost trashed. The next difficult thing is trying to find a RV park that will allow a 16ft trailer, a 18ft boat, and two vehicles to be parked "almost" for free or w.e that also has internet..... gotta have internet. The search goes on.
Tonight we took a cruise to buy a Miata!! My buddy with the Eclipses wanted a fun "summer daily" since he sold an Eclipse and was down to his bagged summer nice car and his orange daily beater Eclipse... and he decided the Miata life was for him. Which I can dig! The car had 89,000 mi on it and had a mint body. No rust in any of the normal places. Not seeing winter and barely seeing rain has that effect I guess, lol. It was gorgeous. The only "issue" is that it was an automatic, which is why no one had bought it yet. But as it so happens, my buddy would rather have an automatic since he like cruising and not shifting. So it was a match made in heaven! I'm stoked that we have one running around town now. Then when I got home I had a little bit of energy left so I did the hopefully final sanding on the RX7 door panels and slapped the door cards together for mockup. Next up.. vinyl. I sorted it out and got the rest of the car perfect, but didn't use enough reducer and too low a temperature hardener on the final coat, so I got some orange peel. I ordered more blue to reshoot. I'm going to wet block the whole car and put three more coats on when it gets here.

That's looking sweeet Serj. Lots of hours into it, is that some engine bay shaving I see? How'd the top of the car work shooting it outside?? Did you run into dust issues? I can't seem to keep dust down in a garage, I can't imagine outside. But I got a tent similar to what you have there that I'm thinking of trying to paint the Celica in just to say I "did it all at my tiny shit garage." Keep us posted, awesome progress.
