Since you guys are still discussing it:

The tow hitch in question.
[t]https://s18.postimg.org/vl1ktflyv/DSC_0189.png[/t]
The "max recommended downward load" label in the trunk lid frame.
Have been pondering on getting a steel fixed tow hitch assembly from the VW Passat based on the same platform, should be plug & play.
what's the point if it can only take 80kg of tongue weight? What could it possibly tow?
what's the point if it can only take 80kg of tongue weight? What could it possibly tow?
Quite alot of things actually. My audi could only call for 200-400lbs touget weight but I far exceeded that on a regular basis.
Only thing you gotta do is even out the trailer. Boats and campers have a "static" load. So you would load the trailer in a manner not to agitate the tongue weight situation.
You're putting it in a truck?
Nah, not sure what I'm going to do with it. It's way too big to actually stick it on anything and be practical. It's almost as big as the damn engine I'm building.
It'll probably used as a really heavy piece of furniture or something, lol.

my camper has a leaky roof and water damage in two separate areas. I tore out the first one, and Im about to start on the second one after some ramen. I guess this means the resealing project got pushed up from next spring to next week.
On the brighter side, yesterday I painted the stripes on my camper to match the truck, and repainted my obscure 70s camper manufacturer badges. Also, Ive got a 100w solar panel sitting in my living room, waiting for me to fix the roof and mount it.
Eyyy, I was just about to post that the RV leaks. Only around the rear ventilation duct but I went up on the roof in the pouring rain and there's splits in the rubber roofing all over the place. It's not unsalvageable but damn if it ain't a pain. At least the leak was literally directly above the toilet so I just left the lid up, but I'm very concerned about damage to the wood in the roof. We've got some moderate delamination of the ceiling in the rear area.

You may not want to deal with it, but if you leave it be, the moisture spreads to other parts of the ceiling like a sponge, and after it sits a while it starts to rot. My water damage pretty much just happened since I got my camper in febuary, because the PO left it in a shed when he wasnt using it. Even in just that time, some of the studs are starting to rot.
Tear the soggy part of the ceiling out before it gets any worse. DP just told me about this wonderful shit:

Im gonna re-caulk the joints and vents in my roof today, then cover the whole thing in this stuff. You might want to look into it. If your roof is actually rubber and not another elastomeric coating, you might have to get a different version of it.

Can someone explain that "whistling" sound. Starts at 0.14. ( not my video )
I have a similar sound on my 9-3, i can hear it everytime i hit the gas a little and while driving normally. No engine light.
Thinking of a vacuum leak somewhere?
My friend has two Saab 900s and another friend has a Saab 9-3. They all make this slight whistle. Sounds like a bad turbo to me, but who knows.

I've got roof sealing tape, I'm going up this morning to seal up every crack. Is it really too late to save the wet roofing pieces? As I understand it these tears have been on the roofing for some time, at least two or three rainy seasons.

Roof tape tends to lift occasionaly.

And does not stick very well at all on anything other than flat.
I mean if you do manage to stop ALL the leaks completely, the ceiling board and insulation should dry out eventually, but who knows how much mold and shit could be up there? I guess it depends on your location and climate.

It's in central California so it'll see several hot days before it rains much again. Currently it's parked in the hottest city in the county. Should dry out reasonably quick like.
[editline]17th October 2016[/editline]
However yes, I am aware that the roof is probably toast and going to need refurbishment. Soon.
Today's not my day. Drove to work today because I stopped by my next apartment to buy some furniture from the current tennant. When I parked it was just fine, came out after work to a flat tyre. Got my mom to drive me home to get a spare, but when I went to change it, I found a bunch of grease directly under the inner CV joint... Well, guess I at least found the cause of the knocking sound.
Good news is that CV axles aren't expensive and are easily replaced
Hey all, quick question about importing cars older than 25 years into the USA. Moving over in the next few months or so and wanting to import something uniquely Australian into the country because why the hell not. Car is more than likely going to be a VL Turbo Commodore. Sadly I can't find a great deal of information about importing cars from Australia, only really from Japan.
In regards to importing, I understand there are no restrictions once a car is 25 years old (except for Cali and the EPA). What I need to know is how do I go about the customs forms, are they easy to fill out or near impossible? Chances are it will be shipped to LA and either put on a truck or driven upto Oregon where I will be living, would it have to be inspected for emissions as it'd going into California?
Anything else I need to know?

If I can find one sure!
Great news, I found a place to work on my car. It's inside the building next-door. I can use the part behind the shelving. I just need to put up some sort of wooden wall.

I got a question regarding car audio;
Are there devices of some sort I can put on a power supply and my car sound system (like axu input or Bluetooth)? I like my current radio but its as old as the car, so no its just a radio with different channels

So if If I recall right, you're going to need an import broker. They for the most part will take care of the nitty gritty import forms, but you still will be required to sign your life away with US Customs, and be subject to some bullshit extra fees, etc. Just the way importing goes in this country apparently. Anyway, I don't think it needs to be Cali inspected if it's not going to be driven in that state, even counting driving to another one.
Here's a video of Skylinedude talking details of importing his Skyline for some reference (excuse the windy audio):

Doug Demuro has a slightly better explanation..
I think the main difference between importing anything that is not a car and an actual car is that in addition to the usual shipping process, you have to sort through the registration process. Whether a car can/will even be imported tends to be the main factor, most companies know ahead of time what can be done, and obviously reject people trying to import something that is illegal to drive. Then the other main factor is just dealing with the costs, and dealing with the short-notice nature of customs/your broker.

Yeah, I don't know about where you are, but here in Norway you can get those at pretty much any gas station, or electronics shop. They transmit your Bluetooth or AUX over FM so your radio can pick it up.

That sounds real rad, I live in the Netherlands, any idea what they are called?
And how do they work? Can you set a channel or something?

I use a wired FM modulator which is a box that intercepts the FM signal (flip a switch you install wherever to switch between FM and AUX) going to an aux-in bluetooth adapter powered by the 12v socket.

I know you're Dutch so the US eBay isn't ideal, but these are examples of what you'd be looking for, this combination will work in any car with a radio antenna and a radio.

I use whatevers cheapest like this on amazon and just buy a new one when it inevitably dies after a year or two

if your radio has a tape deck, then there's also pseudo-tape to minijack adapters, which then can be hooked up to a bluetooth A2DP to mini-jack adapter, so you avoid the cellular interference, which is a problem with most FM transmitters.

Something that old should be easy to reverse engineer, so you can put a switch in to choose between retrofitted-line-in and the original tuner.
So I look out my window the other day, and the Karmann Ghia from Kill Bill Vol 2 Was being delivered to my house, which is now in my garage. My landlord decided to buy it.

Was built by kelly moss motorsports and sits on a porsche 911 chassis with a straight 6? 911 motor as well. the total build cost was between $120-160k.
Not bad!

I'd rather not fiddle with it too much tough
So the coolant tank in the jetta decided to snap off the little nipple for the recovery hose... I learned this after the hose came off and sprayed shit EVERYWHERE while driving.
Replaced the fucker with a tank from the same model, but different engine. The only difference was the sensor plug was on the other side of the tank.
So... subtract $20 from the cost of the tank, and spend 20 minutes soldering extension wires for the sensor. Bam, new tank for half the cost.
