Both of the rear bumpstops fell off my truck.
Guess I gotta take it easy on the jumps from now on.

You know, speaking of bumpstops, I noticed on my mom's Honda Odyssey that for at least the rear suspension, every piece is separate. Like the bump stop has it's own section independent of the strut (or is it a shock on those cars?) and spring. So odd to see, used to coilover designs. But yeah, I look at it and think, can't that damn stop fall out easily? I mean maybe not if my mom's never had an issue. Plus, maybe they are "loaded" when the van is actually on the ground.
Here is an example.
So I've been thinking about buying a car for a while and I just can't decide on what I want.
Comfort and style are two things that I think very highly of, while reliability comes in next and beats out things like performance, trade in values, MPG (anything above 20 is fine with me) and anything else.
For a long time I was set on picking a BMW 3-series with less than 80k miles for around 10k or less. I know there are long-standing stereotypes of "BMW drivers" but to me it was the affordable choice that looked good and sounded reasonable.
I've been doing a lot of research though, and BMW reliability ratings just are pretty terrible. I really like the idea of buying a used german luxury car, but there's nothing that would fit within my budget (less than $200/mo, or as close to $300/mo after insurance as possible)
After doing research and talking to friends, I've kind of settled on the idea that Lexus is a great pick in terms of reliability and comfort - but even those are hard to find after like 2007 with less than 100k miles and still within my price range.
I've also been considering doing what every other milennial my age seems to be doing and buying a new 2015 or 2016 hatchback under 11k and coasting on the warranty. They seem beyond ugly and those hard plastic interiors seem so uncomfortable.
Something with a little more room like a hatchback, wagon, or crossover (I looked at the later model dodge caliber's for a bit) would be nice, but again cargo space is second to looks for me. Does this make me a bad person?
I live in Phoenix AZ and would be willing to travel for something that fits what I'm looking for. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Or is this purely a case of having expensive taste that's way out of budget? I make ~40k a year with my first big boy job out of college. Can I comfortably look at higher budgets as a bachelor who lives alone?
Your budget is $10k or less?
Your budget is $10k or less?
Originally it was, I'd really love to keep it under 12k but could possibly be persuaded to 15k
feel free to tell me i am a huge fool i will take no offence
I've been lazy taking pics, but here's an update.
I got the wiring for the front of the car pulled and mostly routed, ran the 0 gauge to the trunk, added a 0 gauge ground, ran 4 gauge to the starter and alternator area, and extended some harnesses for the coil to be relocated onto the engine and for the reverse lights, plus bypassed the neutral safety portion of the starter circuit, since we're going manual. Added some wiring for keyless entry, speakers, amp, and a new radio. That's all coming along swimmingly.
Today I pulled some brake lines and a new fuel line, and a did some flaring on some of the pieces. I ran out of brake line, so tomorrow I gotta get some more.

Also pressed in my bushings for the rear and hung the axle back up.. finally. The springs and shocks still need to be changed, but I'm holding off until the engine is in and I can estimate ride height better. I finished up the night doing a rear brake job and connecting the new ebrake cables.

Woah hi fellas remember me? Maybe not this thread moves so fast haha. I always feel sorta conflicted about posting here cause idk much about the technical side of cars. For those of you who remember my land rover conundrum, the dodgy wheel has been taken off and soon all the bolts and shit that hold it on will be taken off and put back on properly by someone who is..a lot more competent than me but letting me help them :v: seemed to be a few screws loose making the steering go "funny" at high speeds, if I drove the fucker the wheel mighta come straight off!
All my cars are fucked and I wouldnt have it any other way
Wait so you don't have a working car? So you prefer to sit there and imagine driving, than actually drive?
Nah my car works, it just slightly pings at idle, the rear muffler rusted and fell off and I hit a curb doing ~70km/h
Ol' Reliable
I need new brake discs and the bloody power steering fluid keeps leaking.
My truck leaks a quart of power steering stop leak in 4 weeks, looses oil out the rear main like it's raining, shifts so hard it squeals tires, has a destroyed cam and possibly destroyed lifters, the ac compressor blew up, the rear diff will hardly lockup when it's suppose to and to top it off the cup holders are too fucking big to hold my fakeyeti cup upright correctly.
The suburban. Mainly the body let's in water, 4x4 no worky, shifts too soft, no ac, no heat, rear ac and heat no work, and hasince a nasty miss fire.
But I love them both dearly.

You could probably comfortably bump up your budget, but you should easily be able to get a good Lexus for that price.

The LS400 is pretty old, but it has a pretty crazy reputation for reliability and comfort (with multiple examples of cars hitting 1MM+ miles with nothing but regular preventative maintenance.
I had a 2005 ES330 that I drove for a while and never had any problems with, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes.
DanTehMan,
Don't count out the Panther platform Ford/Lincoln/Mercurys. They are amazingly comfortable and roomy. Long lasting as well.

I'm rolling in a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. Which was absolutely what I needed when I got it 3 years ago, but I really wish it had some more power. It handles surprisingly good for what it is, if I could just boost it up say 50% I'd be happy.

I'm kicking around what to do about a fuel pump in the celica right now.
My 22R head has a mechanical pump, which I feel like would be fine to run.
Other option is to run an in line fuel pump with a regulator and block off the fuel pump hole.
Is there any advantage to running electric? It just looks more expensive, I feel like I'd be better off doing mechanical with no return line. Not planning on trying to make big powerr or anything.

First snow in the Miata. Kinda scary! An almost empty gas tank, and all seasons I've been trying to burn off. I almost went into the wall more than once. It was 80 degrees yesterday, so I wasn't expecting this much snowfall.

Yeah it hit me by surprise. I haven't driven in the snow for a minute since I was in Mississippi. I don't envy you though, our old '97 was a bitch in the snow.
Quick clip from my dash cam tonight. Ignore the date/time, I installed the camera a couple weeks ago and haven't bothered to set it yet.

Goddamn and there's already a copyright claim against the music on the radio!
Act casual that lane change was on purpose.
My Xterra has allegedly great 4WD performance.
Personally, I can't wait for the snow. It was fun as heck driving home on the night the blizzard hit last year, and that was in my wimpy Rav4. I'd imagine the X will do excellent.
