I need your advice with another car. I`m currently looking at used car I could buy for cheap instead of throwing my money at the Sidekick. There is a 09 Dodge Caliber for $3500 CAD at a dealership. It passed inspection less than a year ago. Is it worth it ?
How much does inspection cost in your province, and is it mandatory? In Ontario, a safety is anywhere between $300-$700, and the car has to pass it to be able to be registered. Just because it passed last year doesn't mean it will this year.
It doesn't hurt to go take a look at it and take it for a test drive. When driving, pay attention to how it shifts, its RPMs at different speeds, if it struggles at certain speeds, how well it brakes, and if there's any weird noises. Drive with the radio off for most of the drive to be able to hear the car better. If you can find a place to safely do so, you may also want to check if the ABS works, or if it even has ABS. Look for rust on the underside/frame, around the wheel wells, and on the doors. If they offer a report on whether the vehicle has been in an accident, find that out too. It's always better if it hasn't. If you know anyone who knows something about cars, have them come along with you and take a look at the engine. Check if the AC works, even though it's December it's better to find out now than in June if you're going to be boiling your ass off because of busted AC.
Also, and most importantly, be aware of scummy dealers who try and tack on extra fees. Bring a copy of their ad with you, and check if your province has an "all-in pricing" law like Ontario. What a law like that means is that the price you see must include all fees associated with the sale of the car. The only exceptions in Ontario are safety, emissions testing, licensing fees, and HST, but if the dealership want to charge you extra for those they must explicitly state they are doing so in the ad. Some shady dealerships will try to entice you in with a seemingly low cost, then start tacking on expensive dealership admin fees and suddenly your $3500 car is now $7000. A place near here tried doing that to us for a Toyota with a blatantly broken alternator. The $4500 car suddenly went up to $6700. I wish I'd gotten a copy of the paperwork so I could have filed a complaint.
those things have an absolutely horrid engine that make about 100 hp less than I'd want in a vehicle of that weight
if it were a caliber srt4 I'd say go for it but if its not even an rt I'd stay away
Thanks a lot. It helps to know what to look for. I'm in the NWT, in Yellowknife.
If I drive my vehicle from Alberta Canada to lets say, California, does it have to adhere to their vehicle standards? If you're only visiting, you're not subject to their emissions/safety regulations.

Did the MTF and oil on the Civic, went to undo the fill plug on the trans... That didn't happen, piece of shit is so in there that the head of the bolt is warped outwards and the copper washer under it is squeezed. Bottomed out the motor mounts and had the whole car shaking on the stands, gave up after an hour or so.
Fuck you Honda engineer for putting the wedging the most important bolt of the transmission against the subframe where you can only fit a wrench and a 1/2" socket doesn't even fit by itself.
[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5601782/EF%20Pics/2016-12-05%2016.58.27.jpg[/t]
Thank you other Honda engineer for putting a very nicely accessible reverse switch on top of the trans.
[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5601782/EF%20Pics/2016-12-05%2016.57.36.jpg[/t]
Just dumped 2qt through the hole, buttoned it back up and called it good. Shifts a bit better now, was coming due with like 25-30k on it. No idea how people run tens of years and like 100k+ miles without changing out the MTF. I almost thought it had been leaking out but it was pretty much entirely full and I have replaced all the seals on my trans previously.
80% of the oil under the car is from what I can tell to be a bad pcv/breather box o-ring from the silly little box on the back of engine under the intake mani and water pipe. The rest is just from it being a shitty single cam that likes to leak no matter how many times you replace certain gaskets.
[editline]5th December 2016[/editline]
Oh I also used a 13 year old can of spray adhesive to glue some material on my old drivers seat after a removed ducktape job and the previous owner ripping it to shreds. Packed some paper towels in there to make up for the removed foam even too. The Integra seat's adjuster cable broke so this one went back in.
[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5601782/EF%20Pics/2016-12-05%2018.20.06.jpg[/t]
I'll have to like pin, glue or sew it to itself to get rid of the flap, thought about cutting it but the less edges to peel up, the better.
I should never do upholstery.

Update on the PT Cruiser GT:
Leaking a quart of oil every week now. I think it's the turbo return... Not sure till I can get under it this weekend.
Neon SRT-4:
Determined boost leak is probably the BOV opening per-maturally or the hot side of the turbo is leaking where it goes to the hard pipe.
