For my 1,000th post on this forum, I wrote a bit about this band and John. This orignally was about John Lennon's 30th death anniversary, so I modified it. Long read ahead.
John Lennon was an amazing influence on all our lives. And yet some people today do not realize what the little boy from Liverpool accomplished, with a little rock group called the Beatles, and his never ending strive for world peace. John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in a large port city in England called Liverpool. He began playing the guitar after inspired by an Elvis song, and created his own little skiffle rock band, The Quarrymen, with some friends, one of them being a boy named Paul McCartney. They played many performances, most notably in the now-famous bar called The Cavern Club, where they changed their name from 'The Quarrymen' to the 'Silver Beetles', and finally, 'The Beatles'. By now the band had 5 members, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. Sutcliffe died of a brain aneurysm, which shook John deeply, as he had lost a great friend. After about a year or two, on August 18th 1962, a drummer named Ringo Starr replaced Best, as Best had not been up to snuff in drumming. A few months later, their first hit single 'Love Me Do' was released in January 1963, with it quickly hitting number 2 in the U.K. charts. After 2 months, their first LP, 'Please Please Me' was released in March 1963. No one was prepared for what was about to happen. It skyrocketed to number 1 in the charts, and was there for a few good weeks. They released 17 other chart-topping singles, but almost none of the sales even compared to the initial success of 'Please Please Me.' Then, in August of the same year, the release of the single 'She Loves You' had become the quickest chart-topping single ever recorded by British music, until 'Mull of Kintyre' in 1978 by McCartney's solo band, Wings. England had gone into a frenzy for, of all things, rock 'n roll. The band's first album, 'Please Please Me', had been number 1 for 30 weeks now, but their music hadn't done much out of England. With their second LP, 'With the Beatles', the US finally caught wind of this little port band. With the help of Time magazine, The Beatles records started to sell in the US, and they were almost instantly a hit. Everyone wanted to be them, see them, be part of them, England and the US alike. The Beatles then decided to depart to the US for a concert in 1964. On February 7th 1964, they landed to thousands of screaming girls wanting their attention. After 2 days of viewing New York, they played on the Ed Sullivan Show. On that date, over 74 million (40% of the population) Americans watched the show. To this day that record of a most-watched live program has never even been touched. After many successful tours and concerts, they went back to produce their first movie and 3rd album, 'A Hard Day's Night'. It was insanely popular, as the movie and LP got numerous accolades for their success as a rock group. They then began to continue producing chart-topping singles and albums, such as 'Beatles for Sale' and their second movie and 5th album, 'Help!' In 1965, McCartney played Yesterday by himself in front of a huge, wealthy British audience, one of them being the Queen Elizabeth II. She appointed them the appointed the members of the Order of the British Empire. As always they kept releasing and releasing number 1 singles and albums, with their best album yet, 'Rubber Soul.' They then played a concert at the now-demolished stadium Shea Stadium in August 1965. The concert tickets sold out in 17 minutes, with a record audience of 55,600. It was beginning to become apparent that they had grown tired of playing live, as for most of their songs you couldn't even hear them play, as the screaming was far too loud. They then released their 6th album in that same year, 'Revolver', which is still hailed today as one of the premier rock albums. They did a few more tours, then stopped in mid-1966. The world had wondered, "where did the Beatles go? The Beatles had dried up!" But no, they were taking a much-needed break and working on their next album, which would be the biggest craze ever in the history of modern music. 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' was released on June 1st 1967, just in time for summer. The album was a worldwide critical and commercial success, spending a total of 27 weeks at the top of the UK Album Chart and 15 weeks at number one on the American charts. It sparked the summer of love, which convinced thousands of 'hippies' to create a cultural and political revolution. Today, 'Sgt. Pepper' is noted as one of the greatest albums of any genre of all time, with it selling over 32 million copies. It seemed as if the Beatles were on top of the world, and in a sense, they were. But as with all great things, they must fall eventually. Turmoil had begun in the band, and arguments and fights began to happen more and more frequently. Starr and Harrison temporarily left the band during the production of their next album, The Beatles, more commonly known as the White Album. The Beatles was released on November 22, 1968. It, as any of their other records, flew to number 1 and stayed there for a good while. But people began to worry about them, as the album, as many of the members stated, "It was more of a single-person effort than a group effort." "It was either just me, or just Paul, or just George or Ringo", stated Lennon during the mid-70's. After this, the tension had grown considerably, but they kept pressing on and releasing more music, with the release of their movie Yellow Submarine and Soundtrack/Album of the same name. In September 1969, The Beatles released their last album, Abbey Road. (The tracks on Let it Be were already completed for the most part, yet it was released after Abbey Road.) Abbey Road is considered as one of their most tightly constricted albums, even though the band could barely stand the sight of each other. It became one of the most successful Beatles albums ever, with it debuting at straight-up number 1 in the UK. After the amazing success of Abbey Road, Let it Be was released in May 1970, after Paul McCartney's solo album, McCartney, released just a few months before. The Beatles had now broken up and had gone their own separate paths. They began working on their solo careers, building families, and wondering how they would function in their society as individuals, not as the Beatles. McCartney formed Wings, a very successful and popular band. Harrison formed the Traveling Wilburys, and Starr formed his All-Star Band, which still performs today. But John himself had another idea of how to use his fame. While the Beatles were still together, he and his spouse Yoko began a peace campaign, with them spending their honeymoon in a bed in Germany advising peace for all. Throughout the rest of his life, Lennon devoted himself to spreading peace and good will through the whole world, even if he dropped out of the spotlight for 5 years to raise his son, Sean. Then, in August 1980, Lennon decided to start work on an album, Double Fantasy. He worked as hard as ever, for he had been out of the scene for 5 years. Then, the fateful night happened. On December 8th, 1980, John and Yoko walked to their recording studio, only to be mobbed by fans asking for autographs. One of them was to be a man who would live in infamy and be detested for the rest of his life, Mark David Chapman. After a long night of working, John and Yoko came home, and were walking up to his suite in the Dakota Building. Chapman had waited for several hours for him. As Lennon walked by him, he whispered "Mr. Lennon..", and fired 5 hollow-point bullets from a .38 revolver into Lennon. Four of them hit John in the back and shoulder. He was dead within 20 minutes and Chapman was immediately arrested. The world had been shocked. They had lost their light, their hope, a man who only wanted peace for everyone. 11 people even committed suicide when they heard of the tragedy that had befallen the world. Chapman was sent straight to prison, where he remains today. Now, you people of this thread probably wonder why I spent an hour and a half writing this essay about Lennon and the history of The Beatles. This is why. When John Lennon was murdered, as my own mother put it, he was frozen in time. What he had done, what he was going to do, and his presence had changed the world forever. With his murder, we today can only wonder what our world would have been like if he lived. This is why us, as a nation and a world population, will never forget that fateful night, with the loss of one of the greatest, peaceful, inspiring people today, past and present. Look back on his legacy and how he changed the world for everyone. Listen to the Beatles, listen to his solo work (it's a bit gritty mind you.) Let us hope that, even 100 years from now, he and the little band from Northern England will be listened to, that Lennon's message for peace will always be in our minds, never changing, never wavering. And please, give peace a chance.
Thanks for reading. tl;dr, read the last 2-3 paragraphs I apologize for the code box but it was the only way I know of to shorten the length of my post. :C And yes some information is wrong/ overlooked because I originally wrote this in a very small time frame and did what I could.
Fffuuu only can read up to the 4th paragraph on my iPod, I'll read the rest later but it's pretty nice :3:
That was a good read.
Fffuuu only can read up to the 4th paragraph on my iPod, I'll read the rest later but it's pretty nice :3:
You'll love it!
That was a good read.
Thanks. :3: I personally think the highlight of the message is my Mom's statement about him being frozen in time. It really hit me when I began to think of his murder that way.
Good read, enjoyed it.
The most sad part is when my parents or whatever or whatever adult will say: "I remember when that happened...I was watching the Sunday night Football Game..." It seems that everyone in America was all doing the exact same thing when they caught wind of his death. It's depressing.
I got brainwashed, and it's so sad to listen to. It doesn't sound like him at all. I know he was deathly sick but :saddowns:. It's great though.

Got a 5 hour flight which means 5 hours of The Beatles. If I fall asleep like time then I'm in for an interesting dream like last time... [editline]10th February 2011[/editline] :lsd:

:saddowns:
Tell them you're doing a school project about George Harrison and wanted to find out more about the kind of instrument he played.
Am I the only one who can't get enough of this? Probably sets the album off better than any of his other albums have.
If I had $20,000 I would have a lot of fucking money,
