Up until the early '90s, the government had some weird laws regarding headlights - IIRC, they had to be a certain shape, size, total number of lenses, and made of a specific type of plastic. It's why the boxy Mercedes in the US always have nasty yellow headlights, because the plastic is damaged by UV light. Sometimes turn signals are made of proper glass or a different plastic, so they age differently.

Mercedes kept on using the shit plastic longer than other companies, for some reason.

A lot of cars that were imported to the US were required to get different headlights due to the byzantine Department of Transportation legislation.
