Not only do the benefits vary widely from state to state, not all states have them and states other than the one which issued the union are not obligated to honor them. All of Federally enacted protections put into place for marriage (Power of attorney in the event your spouse is unable to make decisions, not being forced to testify against your spouse, etc etc) are not observed when it comes to unions.
