Animals -humans to a large extent- have their standards and mentioned patterns. They feel save if everything is according to that standard.For example, albinos get rejected by their own species because they do not see them fitting into this pattern.
If you don't conquer the whole fucking area and teach people a wider view on topics of life, those norms are going to exist further, sorry mates :(

Now, the topic at hand is a very interesting one, and I think the answer is hard to find. It could root in a sense of control, or trying to fit in with others. ([I]If you have "flaws" that make you differ from others, having a very strong link in opinions could make up for it, removing any worries you might otherwise have / overshadowing your "flaws"[/I])
That's my first thoughts, but hell if I know, I ain't no scientist.
