Quite poor anatomy and material definition
I don't normally shade with pencil. I will continue to not do so. I prefer photoshop for my shading/coloring needs. But hey, at least I'm going to practice some more.
Thanks. LOOK!

I ignore criticism(not that it's not helpful, it just comes off as "MAH ART IS GOOD, YOUR ART SUCK BECAUSE IT NOT HOW I DRAW) by the way. I know it isn't great, but hey, at least they're not stick figures.
I don't normally shade with pencil.
... what?
The heck did you do that drawing with? Looks like shading with pencil. The very fact there are shadows and midtones implies you must have shaded.
Material definition refers to making the different materials in your artwork reflect and absorb light realistically. Just take a look at some reference pictures.
[editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
Like, for example, the spider there has no material definition - it needs pores and hairs. Right now it looks like it's made of painted clay or something.
... what?
I shaded that picture with a pencil, which I don't NORMALLY do. I didn't say I didn't shade it with a pencil.
Better? XD
I realize I should have stuck with real art.
Although I probably wouldn't have gotten anywhere.
I need a desk.
WANT. DO WANT. NNNAAAAOOOOOWWWWW!
Hot damn, I would buy that in a heartbeat. One of the best sci-fi horrors of all time.
Also, fuck- why did I ever stop practicing? Oh yeah, because I was destracted by work and my ex leaving and all sorts of wonderfulness. Oh well, dust off my hands, get back on the saddle. PRACTICE TIME!

this is a really nice idea, but its not quite convincing
reflection placement, blah blah blah etc
plus i had to stare at it to see whats going on
You can be straight up to people, whoever can't take criticism well will call you an ass for that.
Being a harsh critic isn't always being a good critic. Remember that criticism guide linked in the sticky on this forum: you've gotta not be unecessarily harsh or you could just be counter-productive by crushing someone's morale and making them never want to pick up a brush, pencil or stylus (whatever those tablet pen things are called) again. Some people need a boot shoved up their arse, some people need to be encouraged in a more friendly manner. A good critic will be able to tell which is the best way to critique an individual's work.
The balance between an artist not being able to take criticism and the criticism being too mean is a precarious one.
Yeah, good point, but 3v3ryb0dy is usually pretty accurate in his crit, though maybe a little too straight up sometimes. But hey, I'd prefer harsh truth over sweet lies any day.
Oh yeah, don't get me wrong. A critic should never lie. I just mean that in some situations saying "You need to improve ___ by ___" is better than saying "___ is shit, you should do ____". But a good ol' harsh truth is much more often good for somebody than anything else.
Was trying to make a more general point though, I wasn't talking about 3v3ryb0dy in particular.
Well, in terms of critique, CC isn't a bad place, there are a lot of decent artists who offer good advice here.

"You need to improve *** by ***" is such a boring way to put it and just puts emphasism on "I'm trying to be nice, I'm a good boy, don't want to offend, don't take it the wrong way".
Just saying it as it is is much better, doesn't put in any false feelings or anything like that, what the critic personally thinks is expressed. But of course, if you are a person that thinks kindly like that then of course that is the way to go.
Personally I get the feeling of being lied to when people are kind when CC'ing anything I do. It makes me think that either they are A) Stupid and can't see even the most obvious wrong things or B) Lying and holding back in order to not "hurt my feelings".
I prefer going the "_ is shit, cause you _, you'd better _" way for the first time, cause everything needs to be balanced.
For example take that chucknorrisanimedude, he thinks he's a good artist because foolish common folk go with the "OH HE'S BETTER THAN ME, ARTIST!" logic and say he's good. Now he foolishly has the misconseption that he's worth anything yet.
In real life I don't go all shitting over everyones work, there I usually can understand the terms they are engaging under when they come and say "LOOK WHAT I DID!".
Unless they ask me to critisiez.
Your showreel will have video copilot tutorials where the outcome is exactly the same?
No, that smoke trail thing is just a shitty placeholder. The actual showreel will have my main projects.
Not sure I can define my question as "creative" but it has to do with pictures/images so..
I just need to know quickly if there's any software to capture an entire web page in .png format. I want to printscreen an article that does not fit onto the display (you need to scroll) and regular Print Screen only captures what is on display currently.
Any ideas?
sorry to break it to you, but it's still quite far from finished. The face is a big slap of unfinishness
No need to apologize as you're quite correct.
What I really should have said in my post was, "I fucked this drawing up a while back by laying down the dark values in his hair with compressed charcoal, neglecting both the highlights in his hair, as well as the fact that compressed charcoal is near impossible to erase after it's smeared into the page. His face was left flattened, void of shape and depth. After many failed desperate attempts to revive said highlights, I have decided to abandon this work, keeping it as an ugly reminder that patience is a virtue."
Personally I love your criticism, you're harsh but you don't lie, and there's nothing I despise more than lies.
hey guys it's me again
so i started learning about 3 days ago and this is last night's first go at perspective

Only thing that kinda gets me are the 2 road-lines on the bottom, they don't seem to fit, just sayin.

There's always chalk?
you can experiment with that but for the love of god don't do it on the kubrik one, cause as far as portraits goes, this looks like the subject and has therefor succeeded.
You just need to lay down some shading on his face, t'sall.

Lovely.
Yes, the soldier's face is very nice, my only critique would be the grenades (and maybe sleeve folds?).
I haven't been able to get the hang of shading with a tablet, since I mostly use pencil/charcoal/some oil painting, and programs like Photoshop's darken vs lighten method of shading is just awkward for me. Anyone have tips or websites for learning to use a tablet for art?

I'm probably contradicting myself, but you're a very good critic.

That's rather cynical. I nearly always critique kindly just because it's in my nature to be like that, but I never lie... I guess that makes me stupid :v:
That's rather cynical. I nearly always critique kindly just because it's in my nature to be like that, but I never lie... I guess that makes me stupid :v:
As I previously stated, if that's just how you are then there is nothing wrong with it.
And there is a difference between being kind and giving criticism on all the wrong things and being kind and only noting some flaws here and there... Usually just like that "it has some flaws here and there, but otherwise super awesome! Ur relly guud! xD"
Ah, I guess I misunderstood you. Yeah, I hate it when I come across useless "criticism" like that because usually a) no they're not very good and b) way to not give any advice. I hate it when people say "there are flaws" without elaborating.
I suppose we're getting off-topic here, and it's my fault. For that I apologize.

You remind me of someone else I know.
You do realize that sometimes people just aren't looking for flaws and mayhaps they just think your stuff looks good? They don't have to be either stupid or lying.
