I decided to do some drawing today. I took a second to make a quick doodle of a possible character in the corner, and then tried to make a detailed version of it.

As you can see, I'm not much of an artist, but I don't think it came out [I]too [/I] bad. I really don't like how the wrappings under the mask look, but I stuck with it anyways. I'll try to find a better way to draw it in the meantime. I still need to work A LOT on shading, and in retrospect, the strap on the goggles looks awful.

So, yeah, I understand the art itself isn't too good. But how is the character's design? I actually kinda like it.

I don't get it, I can manage values with pencils just about fine, but once I start painting I get dumber than a 7 year olds sonic drawings.

Gonna limit myself to 4 values per material from now and use 100% brushes.

a major point with art is to develop your own style instead of trying to mimic other's.

Personally I think it helps you develop your own style if you mimic others early on. You've got to start somewhere.

Yeah alot of it is trying to do it like someone else so you get a feel for how they do it, and building off that.

Or screwing up in the process and then "hey, that looks kinda cool"

Quite shit.
Lineart is unclean and scribbly, everything is undetailed and has no depth.
Draw with pencil and paper, learn how to do lineart, anatomy, proportion, shading etc.

It doesn't really look japanese to me, you could make it look like a brush stroke.

Or you could try playing on the ancient japanese writing order, you know top to bottom like:
