You sore understand what is this I guess.
Fuck wrong image.
Now it is what I need.

So I am continuing on my first real work and it seems that I am getting better.

It's not too bad. But the linerat don't match the coloring.
Are you gonna turn the lineart layer off when it's done?
turning linart layer off is a bad idea, best colour over it.
turning linart layer off is a bad idea, best colour over it.
Not necessarily if you have a lineart (or a simple sketch) on low opacity that you just use as guidelines for the final paiting.
But I can see that that is not what Euphe is doing.
And Euphe, the linart is too thick and blocky.
I know what Detlef is on about. My lineart is always really shit and undetailed but it's just a guideline for painting that isn't present upon the piece's completion.
I planned on removing the layer completely. But I will try coloring over it.
Didn't know whether to create a thread for this since its a shitty WIP. I started drawing this just to see if I could actually get a decent style going as well as try and draw something with decent proportions.

I'm not comfortable with the shape of the head(getting the shape right before doing ears) and I have no decent reference for the hands yet. Any tips or CC?
Looks like Simon Cowell wearing a mask.
Don't shade using black or grey - you've made him look undead.

Still can't decide on his hair, I was gonna go for something like eraserhead.

I'll try some different shading and see how it looks.
I guess if you've made him to look uncanny or sublime or whatever then it's acceptable. Bump up the values though.
Did you practice any anatomy or work from reference before making this?... cos the proportions/perspective are pretty fucked.

Barely did any actual anatomy. Really wish I took life drawing in college now :smith:
Just wanted to see what I could do without references.
I would recommend doing far more studies before trying to work entirely without reference. I myself am certainly not any where near the stage where I can work without reference. Tbh I think producing work entirely from the mind is the true test of artistic ability.
[editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
But then again I know jack shit.
I've done about... 10 or so studies and right now I am able to work without reference with enough quality to convey a point but it's still nowhere near acceptable.
Also some brig-brained motherfucka.

Boredom doodlol, forgot some highlights, some anatomy but it's all good.
For me it feels as if the arms aren't part of his body. Like they are coming from the corners of the drawing. And that's one big head.
yeah could've made the colours bit more uniting at elbow parts. Or atleast put some effort into shading the arms. Kinda bring down the whole image.
3v3ry, people shouldn't get butthurt over your crit because it seems you're as demanding to others as you are to yourself.
Most people when they get 3v3's critique for the first time is questioning who that douchebag is. But if you can filter out the actual critique you can learn a lot of it.
It's something you have to get used to. And it sometimes makes me laugh.
So I made this a few days ago:
[img_thumb]http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm225/SkywardDescent/DustWalkerS.png[/img_thumb]
And decided I liked the design of the character. So I am going to try and draw a full one. Still a WIP
I've only made some meager progress so far.

I'm not good at drawing people at all, so this is going to be a bit of a challenge. Its not supposed to be human, so I have a bit of leeway when it comes to proportions, but I'm gonna have some challenge getting them to look right, and not ridiculous. Even the shoulder I just started making seems off. I think it just seems to small, like its not far away from the neck (I don't really know how to describe it >.>)
And I still need to find a better way to do the wrappings, they looks pretty bad...
if I was as demanding of mysef as I was of others I would own a goddamn porsche 944 by now.
[editline]15th January 2011[/editline]
trick is to draw out the whole body so you know where to go next instead of focusing on one part at a time, being oblivious about what comes next and more importantly what was before.
Also it's important to break down into basic shapes and such.

Just got a glimpse of how the last one really looks like. Wow, it sucks balls.

Oh good, for a minute I was worried that you forgot that add that part to your post.
God forbid you forget to offer constructive criticism without bashing some one's artistic ability.
It's hard to tell someone to get better at something without implying they are not good at it. At least now you understand you are bad at something, rather than just being mediocre. This should inspire you to work harder... or make you quit. I'm hoping the former, but that assumes that you actually care and/or have a spine.
I knew that I wasn't good to begin with.
But hey, everyone starts somewhere, and how am I supposed get better at drawing without practice?
Practise. And then accept the criticism and build on it. Practising and practising and practising but only building on cheap niceties will get you no where. Some people are rude on the internet. Get used to it. It's more useful that way anyway. I'd rather have my artwork slated on here than go to some shitty highschool art teacher who is too scared to hurt my feelings.

Who said you shouldn't practise?
He just said it was bad. He gave you constructive criticism and then you get stuck up in that he called your bad drawing bad? He even gave reasons for why it was bad.
3v3rybody, despite you thinking of yourself as an art god here, I seriously can't see you put your knowledge in your own work. You give out a lot of critisism and while some of it is helpful you still don't miss the chance to bash others work, which doesn't help anyone improve or make you any better, even though it feels like it.
Maybe if you worked your critisism into your own artwork you would see a better improvement in yourself, as well in how you can help others become better rather than to put them down.

For the most part, I agree, I don't want to be told its great when it clearly isn't. But to me, there's a difference between some one saying "its bad" and some one saying "Wow, it sucks balls." One seems like he's trying to tell you need to improve, the other seems like he's deliberately trying to put you down.
I guess that's just me though. Harsh criticism doesn't dissuade me. I'm just drawing this stuff, because I enjoy doing, no matter how bad it comes out. I'm not trying to be an artist or anything, its just my own enjoyment, not to impress other people.

Meh you don't have to be good at something to critique it - Simon Cowell certainly ain't no singer and Mark Kermode doesn't make films.
I don't give a shit if 3v3 doesn't improve and lives in squalid mediocrity for the rest of his life - as long as he's helping me with harsh-as-fuck criticism I'm fairly happy.
He always bangs on about how shit he is like a manic depressive anyway. Sure he criticises like he's an artistic genius, but he sure as hell doesn't think he is.
I'm not trying to be an artist or anything, its just my own enjoyment, not to impress other people.
I can understand that totally but then... makes me want to ask the question: "why post it on a forum then?".

When the FUCK did 3v3rybody EVER, EVEEEER consider himself an art God? 3v3rybody doesn't think he's good and he's never said so either, everyone else are just kissing his ass and licking it clean everytime he posts criticism. 3v3rybody has never said anything about himself that throws himself in a positive light.
3v3rybody just has knowledge, that's all. Knowing how to do something is COMPLETELY SEPARATE from actually being able to use that knowledge.
Being a good critic has jack shit to do with being a good artist. You can be the best critic in the world without being able to draw stick figures or turn on a camera.

I appreciate the CC, and I'll be sure to use it. it was him saying it "sucks balls" that put me off, because it seemed like it served no purpose than to put me down.
As for the practicing bit, I guess I just got ahead of myself, there.
