• Music Reviewers You Pay Attention To

I don't mean websites you check for posting reviews... e.g. AllMusic, Entertainment Today, Rolling Stone Magazine. I'll start with Robert Christgau. Now the only reason I found this dude, was because some dullerd decided to post every review of his next to an album on wikipedia. Seeing how vast his collection of reviews are: http://www.robertchristgau.com/cg_stats.php I was intrigued. This man listens to every genre thinkable, although it is clear he doesn't like metal that much... he does enjoy a lot of hip hop. Surprising for an old american white man :v: I do like what he writes, but as the ethic goes amongst reviewers, it generally focuses on how cool it is as well as how well crafted it is. I don't particularly trust his reviews all the time, for example. He gave King Crimson's debut a D+, he hates prog rock in general but at least he loves their Red album and Floyd's Wish You Were Here. I do admire him for not hating on newer music as I read other classic reviewers, they state that rock is dead and act depressed then give up reviewing new music. This dude likes Lady Gaga.... enough said really. Post yours.
me
It's fun to see what people think about what music I love. For example, I like to enjoy some albums that most hate :smug:

I mean, I probably never would have got the story of Hospice by The Antlers very well figured out without random reviewers. But yeah I don't have any reviewers I keep track of. I probably should look up more reviews actually.
I pay about as much attention to music reviewers then I do movie and game reviews. Which is, somewhat. Having universal acclaim may encourage me to check out an album, but if I don't like it, I don't like it. There's not a lot of cases like that though, I love music too much. Overall I like Allmusic the best. The reviews are short and to the point and they review just about everything. They may be very generous with their reviews, but if they give a positive review to something I know I won't like such as a Justin Bieber album of course I'm not going to check it out. Also Robert Christgau is a boring old bitty. His reviews don't really give you that much of an impression and they barely describe the actual music. His review for King Crimson's debut is three sentences ffs.

None, really
I don't pay much attention to music reviewers myself.
"music reviewer"? How can somebody else's opinion on music affect my own? "well it's very...drummy...and there's a saxophone in there...sounds nice..i rate this a 7"
"music reviewer"? How can somebody else's opinion on music affect my own?
Not the point. Nothing "affects" my opinion, it's just interesting to see people looking at music in different ways.
My friends.
I read a lot of music reviews, but I don't let any of them influence what I listen to.
I dunno, I do read reviews to learn how to judge music in different ways. Sometimes my one mind ain't enough :smug:
I read a lot of music reviews, but I don't let any of them influence what I listen to.
Typically I do trust Robert Christgau not that I won't listen to something just because he dislikes it, the best example is Radiohead's Ok Computer and King Crimson's albums. I mean he gives a good base for how decent an album is.
I'm not sure how relevant this is, but usually for me, if a band is recommend by these guys, I will usually agree. They give away free mixtapes too. Niiiiice http://thefourohfive.com/ http://www.thisisfakediy.co.uk/
pitchfork
pitchfork
The only reason I love pitchfork is because of their review for Jet's Shine On. http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/9464-shine-on/
I never read music reviews. I think I've only bought one album that I didn't like, and I knew I was not going to like it going in but I decided to try it anyway. It was Axe To Fall by Converge.
Music reviews are worse than movie reviews. Opinion is too influencing in music.
Backstreet boys > King Crimson?
My sister
The thing is... you will feel better about liking the music they hate. I looked up the worst grades that this guy put down, and they actually sound awesome. :3:
Sergeant D of Stuff You Will Hate and Metal Sucks. I find myself agreeing to much of what he says, he seems to have similar ideas as myself in some ways. :buddy: I love reading bad reviews, the writers always write something hilarious and exaggerate like crazy if they don't like the music, and that just makes me want to listen to the music more. :v:
George Starostin (http://starling.rinet.ru/music/index.htm) A lot more detailed than most music reviews I see, and he's got quite similar tastes to me. A lot of the music I listen to I got from clicking on his reviews for artists whose names I don't recognise and checking out the ones that he rates highly

He's a ridiculous rock fanatic, beyond that even.
