The General Gardening and Home Project Advice Thread

I'm looking for a small plant that is moderately easy to take care of for somebody with no gardening experience whatsoever. Criteria:
Somewhat interesting. I don't care if it blooms of something, I just don't want a generic couple of leaves, but it doesn't need to shoot fire or anything
Indoors: It will be next to my computer, which is near a window. It will not receive direct sunlight, although that can be arranged.
Small: I'll be putting it in a rather small area, so it needs to fit in an area near 1 foot by 1 foot.
Not super difficult to take care of: I'm an amateur here. Re potting every day is too much. I don't care if I have to prune it or do some work with it.

Those are my requirements, I'm hoping that things like these exist and I can buy them easily. Thanks for the help.

I've been considering bonsai for a few weeks now and it looks pretty good, anybody care to direct me towards a good species?
