• Why do you rate posts?

I have lots of opinions, and nothing of value to say about them.
I usually only rate posts when it's a good post. I rate it to reward the person who wrote it. If it is a bad post, I rate it to make sure post owner knows he's doing something wrong. Also, to please myself as it is kind satisfying to rate "Dumb" when a post is actually dumb (hate speeches, racism, jokes about serious stuff etc) Edit: It is also a short way to 'reply' posts without actually typing anything. I mean, Facepunch's got many rating options, so there's usually one that fits post content or my reaction to it
I rate mainly to avoid incredibly pointless and stupid posts like: "I agree!" "Lol that's funny :)"
I rated because no one did and sometimes people just want to get all ratings on a post for the sake of it :v:
I hereby decree that this phenomenon of all ratings be called a "ratebow".
It's amusing to (mis)judge people based solely on how they rate people, especially those that don't post their actual opinions ever some people rate others in the seemingly most insane erratic and unpredictable way imaginable, it's like, you start wondering what kind of insane opinions they have [editline]13th March 2018[/editline] When it comes to truly dumb posts, when its obviously serious it's so much better to rate it funny tbh Like if someone defends collusion with russia as if its an OK thing or something. Ok, maybe he was joking the first post... 9 posts in it's time to rate it all funny
I very rarely use ratings. The only real exception is when I'm reading something that would be difficult to respond to (like a post a few pages behind the current page or a post in an ongoing discussion between other people.)
i just press the buttons to show my opinions on things but i don't really put any thought into it
Because why not?

I like the ratings because they provide a way to quickly understand how people generally feel about certain topics. Sometimes things like sarcasm are hard to understand through text, but simple visual feedback like a rating is often quite clear in its intent. It's especially helpful if you're trying to gauge how to behave on a certain thread, like a way to visually read the mood. Its helpful for socially awkward people like me because I can tell what kind of behavior is considered cool and what's considered wrong with a quick check of the bottom of the post. Guess that's why I like coming here.
Leave Marphy alone he doesn't deserve this
I have no idea who that is
what's a marphy
marphy black the half life facts guy
marphy black the half life facts guy
Humble merchant of clocks and Half Life trivia.
I very rarely post, but I almost always rate. I lurk often and I feel like I'm still part of the thread if I rate in it. Just my thoughts.

I rate post cause social anxiety plagues my life and its easier to push a button to reply instead of having a mental breakdown thinking that what if the thing you just posted is dumb.
Typically I rate posts negative things only, and usually because I'm an arsehole and sometimes I think people are so fucking stupid they don't deserve my time. It saves wasted "You're a cunt" posts and the like, reduces flaming, and more importantly, feeds into a self-superiority complex that allows me to elevate myself over my fellow man, as practice for when I climb into my grade IV-A battlemech and take to the streets of Neo Genokyu, battling heroes and villains alike with a barrage of 7.62 rounds and 40mm shells.
I find that child molester is the best response to rust cheaters complaining about being found out; and heart for a great set of norks.
Why do we do anything
Ratings are a great tool to quickly communicate your emotions about a post. When somebody rates me something positive like funny or agree, I feel pretty good, knowing that I contributed to the forums in some way. So when I rate, I try to give this exact feeling to others. I too often succumb to just rating what others already rated, which is even easier to do now on newpunch.
Because I feel social pressure and don't want to be isolated from my best facepunch pals.
After moderating some half life servers for years I can ensure you that far, very far away into the future and before the possible cold entropic end of the Universe only one thing will remain after humanity is long gone: a message encrypted at subatomic level saying "I didn't use cheats, my little brother connected into my account." Can we encrypt the child molester rating as an elemental particle before then?
I tend to spontaneously give out coins for no particular reason
I rate because my posts are useless
To show how I think about it and I think they make reading threads more funny
I sometimes rate in response to other ratings sometimes. It's like reddit upvotes. Usually I rate because if something is funny, I can just rate it funny rather than making a "Haha that made me laugh" post as that would clutter the thread. I STILL may reply if it was especially hilarious. Like "I laughed so hard I think I sprained a rib" funny. I wish we had optimistic, zing, useful, and informative back.
