My grandfather is an engineer, designed two of the most used agricultural machines, he could run faster than me until I turned 12 (And I was a pretty good runner too, I was in the local football team) and now he has blood cancer. But he is doing pretty good.
My grandfather was 15 when the Germans invaded Poland.
He ran away, but came home when they threated to kill his younger brother if he didn't come back. They made him do hard-labor in a mine, where he stole sausages and butter from the Germans, he sold them in the mine. They then made him serve as a MP near the Baltic. One day, he over heard a group of partisans speaking polish, so he gave them his gun. He was then arrested for conspiring treason and had court-marsh el order filed against him. They then decided to half his prison sentence if he served in Italy. He agreed, and one night pulled a "Bilbo" by hiding in a wine barrel on a train-bound for Poland. When the train arrived, he got out and joined he British-polish corps. He was in-charge of German prisoner camps for the allies (He spoke German) and after the war lived in Italy, Argentina and finally America.
The last time I spoke to him, he was shouting at me because I was "ignoring him".
I miss him.
My Great Grandfather Is a WWII veteran, made it through Kokoda and a fuckton of other campaigns as a howitzer gunner, the worst he got through his service was his right eye getting shot out...He had a fall today...The ambulance came and took him to the hospital...They don't think he'll last long.

my grandfather on my dad's side of the family was pretty badass. he was from Buffalo, New York, and the son Polish immigrants. he joined the US Army to fly in World War 2, got placed as the nose gunner of a B-24. he was the first bombing of Berlin as the squadron leader.
one story about him that I love was when his squadron was doing a bombing somewhere in France and on the return to their English airbase they were ambushed by German planes. both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the attack so he and the navigator took control of the plane and flew all the way back to England and landed. they had no formal flight training at all. he and the navigator received quite a few medals for that. after the war he trained US snipers who would later serve in Korea and Vietnam.
sadly I never knew him, he died when I was 3. all I have is photograph of him holdong when I was a baby, his military photograph (I look like him slightly), a new paper clipping about him, and his knife. when ever I think of him or look at the photo I just get really depressed since I have no memory of him, I really want to know him and not have to hear stories.
He was a great conversationalist when we weren't quarreling over ideologies.
I've inherited a lot of Soviet memorabilia from them, along with a fairly large collection of golden age Russian literature. I'm also told my great (or great, great) grandfather studied under some Soviet commandant but there's not a lot of people alive to confirm it.
My grandma used to shout things in Russian and refer to me as her little revolutionist, I was like 8 at the time though so I didn't really get to appreciate her eccentricity.
see, that's awesome. My family are pretty socialist, but nothing that badass.
Also I'm liking your username.
My grandfather jumped over dead bodies as a kid
Such was life in Finland
My great grandfather(I call him Pepé) Was in the US Navy during WWII, I'm pretty sure he was on the USS Saratoga, he helped planes land on the runway of the ship. Also my Memé's(My great grandmother, the woman he married) dad was in the US Army, and later US Navy during WWI(This is all on my mom's side, and both of them survived the wars).
My granpa was an asshole, some people suspect that he killed my grandma. :smith:

I feel for you, one of my grandparents is a complete cunt. noone ever understands how I could hate my own grandfather, but I suppose that's because they had a nice functional family.
