Ah, I forgot he switched the servers back over. He use to host it in his office.
How can American laws apply to the UK?
I believe it's because the Facepunch servers are in the U.S (Amazon) [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] ninja'd
The only solution is to send some of Garry's elite assassins to kill the head of the news company to a hopping 80s soundtrack.
Best thing since smartness.
This is what I read. Thanks starpluck.
In case you're wondering the source, here's the original post I made:
http://beforeitsnews.com/story/119/180/The_Righthaven_copyright_lawsuit_legal_loophole_and_how_to_protect_yourself_from_being_sued..._SPREAD_THE_WORD_TO_ALL_WEBSITES.html
Most webmasters wish to obey copyright laws and the "norm" around the internet has been for people who have a copyright problem to first file a DMCA take down notice giving the webmaster time to remove the infringing material. Then if the webmaster refuses they can sue them. In fact we all thought that was a REQUIREMENT and were shocked that these guys are actually suing people with no prior notice at all.. We've been wondering how they can get away with that legally and it turns out an obscure section of the DMCA concerning the "safe harbor" noticing proceeders requires that in order for a website to qualify for "safe harbor" and thus require a copyright complainant to first give the webmaster notice and time to take down the material before suing them, requires (amongst other things) that each website register their contact information with the United States Copyright office.
AND
http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101028/15533611640/damn-good-reminder-if-you-run-a-blog-register-for-dmca-protections.shtml Now, as you know, the DMCA creates safe harbors for sites where users post content -- but it's only if you've designated an official DMCA agent with the Copyright Office. After more and more Righthaven cases started showing up, we noticed a pattern. In talking with some of the sites that were sued, as well as some of the lawyers trying to fight Righthaven, it became apparent (quickly) that Righthaven was clearly avoiding sites that had a registered DMCA agent, and basically was relying on the fact that many websites were ignorant of the need to register. So, back in September, we noted, as a bit of a public service announcement, that if you ran any kind of site that allows for public participation, you should register with the copyright office. Seriously. Do it now.
They pretty much took advantage of Garry's ignorance making the lawsuit valid.

Best thing since smartness.
True, except for the lawsuit factor.
Well fuck, now I'll have to clean my browser history every day :v:
it also keeps logging me out, like every 60 seconds. I wouldent mine if it wasent for this
Well fuck, now I'll have to clean my browser history every day :v:
Be a man, wipe your hard disc every 12 hours.
Haha. guests suck [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] should just unlock the Gmod stuff for them
Well ain't that a kick in the head.
Look at all the people registering, we might need more mods. Mod Craptasket 2010/2011.
You don't have to clear your history to log out. You can just delete the cookies FP uses.
I was implying that I can't use Chrome's incognito mode any more now.
So how would they present the case? "Hello we would like to sue them for having articles on their site, even though they gave the source." I'm not much of a law person, but wouldn't giving the source and not taking credit of the article not be plagiarism? [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] I know the loophole is there, but its confusing to me.
I take it it works the same way as in a video. Just because you state where it came from and who made it doesn't make it legal to redistribute our implement into your product. You can't put a whole movie in your movie and replace the sound with songs without asking the copyright holders of the songs and the movie for permission to use their products in your work.
Great income of alt accounts now. . . .
Farewell, lurking guests.
Minecraft thread had always around 30 guests . . . I'm sorry for them :saddowns:
Suddenly FP gets 300 000 members within a month.
Minecraft thread had always around 30 guests . . . I'm sorry for them :saddowns:
Now they can register and sometimes actually contribute to the thread.
RightHaven should be banned! :saddowns:
Because they're using something that is owned by an American company. Hello global commerce.
This didn't work with Pirate Bay, why would it work here? TPB basically wiped their arses on legal threats sent by American companies because they couldn't do shit in Europe.
Guests only steal bandwidth and slow the forums down, if they don't want to register they don't contribute in keeping Facepunch alive.
No you greedy ass they view which gets garry money and helps pay for this.
Also, THIS.
Look at all the people registering, we might need more mods. Mod Craptasket 2010/2011.
I doubt someone on "Last chance or you're perma'd" status is gonna get mod.

We need Garry to comment on this.
We need Garry to comment on this.
He already did in ITN. [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] and his twitter [editline]4th November 2010[/editline] and this http://www.formspring.me/garrynewman/q/1482365707
Would you ever sell Facepunch for lots of cash Yeah garrynewman answered 6 weeks ago
:tinfoil: Let's hope when that happens Google doesn't buy it.
:tinfoil: Let's hope when that happens Google doesn't buy it.
But google would "improve" everything. You'll thank them later...
But google would "improve" everything. You'll thank them later...
Google just buys companies that they want to get their tech. Because FP is just using VBulliten software it would be completely pointless for them to do so. If google wanted something like FP they would probably buy VBulliten and hire people who know how to get things done. Even then, whatever they touch usually goes open source.
Damn, I used to go on as a guest to view the porn threads.
