The gypsies in england are generally thieving dicks
Yeah this thread absolutely needed to go here...
aimed at a younger a I think another reason he made good and evil simplistic was that it was aimed at a younger audience. Brian probably thought kids would be too confused to understand complicated factions or explanations for motivations, He just went " Fuck it, all the kids want to read about is the animals beating on each other, let's just make vermin evil,Why? Because they're vermin".
Yeah, but is that even a good idea? Even in simplistic terms of good and bad, I don't think "you can tell whether someone is good or bad from how they look" is necessarily easier to grasp than "some people are good and some people are bad, and to find out which you just have to get to know them." The latter has the benefit of being a lot closer to the truth and more useful in dealing with the real life issues a kid might have to face, for one thing. I get what you're saying but I don't really buy the idea that we have to fill kids heads with simplistic fantasy worlds before taking those out and replacing them with actual knowledge. What happens if they don't want to let go of those original notions? (the answer is they get jobs on the Fox News Channel)
Yeah this thread absolutely needed to go here...
Im sorry, but I was genuinely explaining why a lot of people hate gypsies.

Cruel wars are obviously for children when commited by animals. Silly TH89
Cruel wars are obviously for children when commited by animals. Silly TH89
Are you contriving to suggest these books were written for adults. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline]
Deja vu...
Okay, damn, that's...that's pretty evil.
sup
So far there is a 1:1 correlation between people who disagree with my analysis of Redwall being racist and people who hate gypsies. Clearly this proves something, I am not sure what but I think it means I am right somehow.
disagree solely to upset your ratio
i like this thread. i feel that with enough effort though you could probably do this with the majority of fantasy fiction. lord of the rings immediately stands out to me as having really rough undercurrents, like the fact all the black, eastern and indian races in the lore are evil
You should write for Cracked.
You should write for Cracked.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing while reading it. Writing style is the same as Cracked. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline]
You should write for Cracked.
Yeah I was thinking the same thing while reading it. Writing style is the same as Cracked.
While I'm convinced by most of your argumentation, ferrets are the bomb. My housemate has one at our house and despite spelling like a thousand old people weeing themselves at the same time, she's fucking adorable.
Laziness is probably the best possible reason to do it, but it's still a pretty bad one. I mean, Tolkien put mind-bogglingly immense amounts of work into world-building for The Lord of the Rings, so clearly taking the trouble wasn't something he had a problem with. Even Jacques could probably invent some villains with some depth in half the time it takes him to write a feast sequence. I think it's more likely they really did see the real world in terms of black and white morality (something that, incidentally, George Lucas has been criticized for by colleagues) and that carries over into their fiction.
The Tolkien things is wierd because even he didn't like having Orcs being evil with no hope of ever being good. It's vaguely suggested in the Silmarillion that Orcs were corrupted elves, which isn't as bad, but still... Also, if vermin are portrayed badly, reptiles get an even worse image in Jacques' books. They're shown as mindless killing machines.
It all makes sense.
so you never explained why I have this feeling of Deja Vu, TH89
Have you ever tried looking through the book of the brothers Grimm: Fairy Tales? I don't think there's any Disney like story in there. People dying, killing, plotting, murdering, raping, incesting, etc, etc.
that's because Grimm Tales is a series of stories for men
Owls are evil in Redwall. That means you're wrong, you fucking owl. [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] Although if you think you know an eviller children's book series I'd be happy to hear it!
That owl family living on the mountain in the book about Martin your move
In "one thousand and one nights" in one of the stories the hero and his friend just as a side note murder two jews and take their donkeys just to get somewhere faster.

Edit: I should've just left it at rating you, but yeah. It makes it harder to read about the countless slaughters in the series to realize that, hey, most of those creatures are adorable if you give them a chance.
We must burn the books! They are the source of racism in our children!!!
We must burn the books! They are the source of racism in our children!!!
So says the guy with the pentagram...
[sarcasm] I loved those books. Oh god. I'm going to be a racist when I'm older! :tinfoil: [/sarcasm] The joke is, I read these books a lot and now that I'm older, I'm not a racist.
I loved those books. Oh god. I'm going to be a racist when I'm older! :tinfoil:
When you're older? What are you, 5? Also i'm glad I never got into those books, I read a couple when I was younger but they just kinda bored me. Books such as the series 'the edge chronicles' were much better, despite the hero always being unfeasably multi-talented, at least the various races were not inherently good or evil.
The Tolkien things is wierd because even he didn't like having Orcs being evil with no hope of ever being good. At the very least the "bad guys" are capable of being good and the "good guys" are capable of being bad. At least the book teaches mercy and kindness over revenge and hatred.
I loved this show when I was a kid. Never considered it to be racist at all. Then again I didnt even know what racism was back then. The hell? I've seen a thread like this before, almost exactly the same except it was longer I'm confused [editline]19th December 2011[/editline] oh this has been mentioned dude it's like the same fucking thread wtf
When you're older? What are you, 5?
Hold on, let me fix it for you.
