Mods vs auto addicts Les go boiz For 10 G you're looking in dealership range which will incur some fees you won't see coming Look for a cheap used Honda CRV. Small SUV barely exceeds crossover territory, same engine as a civic so they're usually cheap to insure and they sold a shitload so parts are easy to find. Watch out for getting major work done at dealerships though, Honda knows their audience. [editline]4th May 2016[/editline] Do not buy a Volkswagen or anything European, any mechanical issues will likely set you back quite a bit. Korean cars like kias and Hyundai's are cheap up front but newer models can still be pricey to maintain.
And one of the least reliable brands. The Suburban scores low on passenger and pedestrian safety as well. Good going. If you need a cheap vehicle, buying one that hogs fuel is not exactly the smartest long-time plan. [editline]4th May 2016[/editline] I'd say be on the lookout for a used VW Golf 2 or 3, but I have no clue about how common they are or their prices in the states. Good luck finding a new car though.
my Silverado has over 300k on the clock without a rebuild or replacing any parts other than regular maintenance parts. it's so reliable that it's boring

And even then, the cult following for Golf2's are growing rapidly, while the Golf3 is considered a cheap beater. But IMO I'd say buy a cheap beater for semi-temporary use and lurk on craigslist or similar/equivalent for a really good deal, but I'm biased towards that [sp]because I'm a greasemonkey[/sp] Either way, Corolla's and Camry's are boring but reliable

This is a cheap and reliable vehicle for the short term and is worth more than the $1500 listed.
If I wrecked my crown Vic today and had to buy a new car, Id get a 90s Lexus ls400. The pinnacle of 90s luxury, and a pretty surprisingly good 4l v8. Well, either that or an old mopar or AMC. I would love to find me a slightly beat up, good running javelin.

That was going to be my second car before I got the Avenger as a "gift". The Suburban type cars may be a little big for me but I'm not ruling them out. A CRV seems like a nice middle ground.
A Subaru Forester would be miles better than a CRV. More reliable, better AWD system (assuming you even find one of the AWD CRV's). Easier to work on when you need to, holds its value better, etc. A Suburban wouldn't be too bad. I'd prefer a diesel one, though. 20-21mpg, very reliable, thelow end torque makes city driving much more enjoyable.

[editline]4th May 2016[/editline] A CRV or an accord would make a great purchase. I had a 90 accord with almost 320k miles before I sold it to a buddy last year. Its still rolling around.

Yeah I don't think I've seen many subarus around here tbh. not that I can remember, anyway? but on Saturday I'm gonna go around and check out the hail sales that the local dealerships are having. some are having some pretty huge discounts on cars that only have minor body damage, so I'm gonna see what's up at those.
foresters (at least old enough to fit the budget) are like unicorns in the south though, they're somewhat rare to begin with and the people who buy subarus don't sell them.
there are a grand total of 3 for sale within budget and within 100 miles of me [editline]4th May 2016[/editline] there are more rolls royces for sale locally than subaru foresters.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/N8kXa4b.jpg[/t] This isn't such a bad list. There are also a few other similar charts around /o/ that have more general advice and tips.
tbh tho that suburban is probably a good bet until you can get something better. Save for rust those 90s GM trucks are bulletproof
I don't have quite enough for it yet, even if I wanted to purchase it outright and I'll need to find some time to go look at it if I figure it's my best option. But like I said, I have it bookmarked.

Though, it'd vary by region of the south. There are dozens of them available here.
Buy a 99 or 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix, really great car for the price.
I find it hard to take someone seriously when they can't even manage to use the appropriate contraction of "you are". Would you rather have a english major posting in this thread or a grease monkey in this thread that smells of gasoline and pb blaster from having HANDS on experience? I've seen more uni body cars get torn to shreds because "ooooooo crumple zones". Pedestrian safety is a thing? I will make sure to add a post it note to my dash to remove my cattle guard when I get near populated city's so I don't kill anyone with my giant steel behemoth that looks like a unicorn. Works great to plow over deer and hogs. The golf 2 and 3's are junk unless your a enthusiast. Only way I'd ever have one is if it had the 1.8 or the 2.0 anything else is just too stupidly high in maintenance cost alone. Plus just about every single one of them has been thrashed on. I knew someone with a trans am that never changed their oil it ran like 200 clicks through eastern canadian winters. absolutely incredible.
Good luck with getting the car, but are cars just really expensive there or is there something I'm missing? I can find a lot of used cars for less than $7000 (Mine was ~$5600) near my place. But seriously, good luck with everything.

what do you mean your insurance payed the gap seems like they didn't pay for anything?
They paid what I still owed on the car so I wasn't still making payments to the bank.
you forgot to mention me in the OP lol
you forgot to mention me in the OP lol
Did you include your FP name in your donation? I may have missed it lol.
no but you did thank me in your original post for this
You and I have never really interacted before but Facepunch has been an important part of my life for a long time. If these guys say you're a good guy I believe it 100%. Its not much but I threw in a little bit. We just had hail come through our area last week and a lot of people had a lot of damage but thankfully my car was spared. I consider myself lucky so I figured I'd pass it on. Best of luck with your situation.
Thanks buddy! I appreciate it. Update on this btw: I've managed to buy some time to look for something nicer because my sister isn't going back to work for a good while. I'll be using her car for another month or so I can have time to get my hours at work up to full time and maybe do my best to get myself a down payment on a newer car. Thanks so much to everyone who's donated and given me advice so far. Things are lookin' up and once I can get enough to manage a down payment, then I'll close up the gofundme. Not gonna try and get any more than I need. Thanks again!
