Suspecting these artists have already been mentioned, but for years and years now I've been loving Tame One, Dessa, Aesop Rock, Sage Francis, El-P, P.O.S., The Herd, Sims, Hilltop Hoods, Company Flow (El-P), A.O.I. (Sage), Camu Tao, and I'm sure a few others I can't recall at the moment. It's a great genre if you've got the right artists in your library.
Indeed, did you ever see his battle raps? Although battles don't really have the deep lines that his songs do, he was a fucking beast in every league he was in.
Yeah, I've been watching his Grind Time shit and it's ace. Loved the 2-on-2 battle he did with Dirtbag Dan against Marv Won and that other guy. Def Jux isn't the only good kind of hip hop or anything.
These have gotten a lot of play as of recent. Drake - Marvin's Room (The video is terrible ignore it.) 2Pac - Nothing To Lose (R.I.P. his music never gets old.) The Weeknd - Wicked Games (Just listen.) Tiara Thomas Ft. Wale - All Around The World (She's a great rapper/singer, Wale's good as usual.) The Weeknd - Rolling Stone Rick Ross / Meek Mill - Perfectionist (Good stuff.) Sage Francis and El-P are probably the ones I listen to on a regular basis the most. I've also noticed that if I want to get someone into hip-hop who is avidly anti hip-hop, the label that often turns them is Rhymesayers. I think it's because with artists like Slug and Grieves, they're one of the crackerest hip-hop labels around.
I fucking. Detest. Rick Ross.
I fucking. Detest. Rick Ross.
but he's hustling
The only reason i have any respect for him is his ability as a label owner. He signs a bunch of people who only make him look worse and worse.
The only reason i have any respect for him is his ability as a label owner. He signs a bunch of people who only make him look worse and worse.
Wale and Meek Mill are way better than him in my opinion, so I'll agree with you there
I like gunplay though.
As is Stalley. I just wish Ross would stay out of their songs with his "WUUH" shit.
I fucking. Detest. Rick Ross.
Why so much hate? He's a good businessman and actor. His rapping is relatively mediocre, but it's balanced out by Meek Mill, Wale, and his production.
His rapping is shitty. He personifies the shallow stereotypes of Southern rap, plus he's got no wordplay ability. And sure, he's a shrewd businessman, which is why he should stay a businessman. Port of Miami was decent, but everything I've heard from him since has been awful. In other news, Tyler The Creator is gonna be featured on a song on The R.E.D. Album.

I obviously don't know about all of the worthwhile rappers in the world. And not everyone on my list of favorites is from Def Jux. But most of them are. :smith:
Port of Miami? It has the same themes he raps about now. Or are you saying it was technically better?
His rapping is shitty. He personifies the shallow stereotypes of Southern rap, plus he's got no wordplay ability.
He's not actually that bad:
It's still pretty shallow, but luckily everything Statik touches turns to gold. And then there's this shit: [editline]30th June 2011[/editline] BITCH I'M BLOWIN UP LIKE NAPALM napalm doesn't even explode you tit
idk cadence and schemes are pretty good, the imagery is great. Wordplay isn't the be-all end-all of rapping.
Not at all. But his rhymes are often completely abstract and tangental, as well as approximate rhymes. Doesn't strike me as something requiring talent. At least some of Wayne's lines make me think, "Oh, that was clever.", because otherwise they have little redeeming value. [editline]30th June 2011[/editline] and his vocal inflection is obnoxious

[editline]30th June 2011[/editline] and his vocal inflection is obnoxious
but Wayne admittedly says "I'm a venereal disease, like a menstrual bleed" which is a really fucking stupid line because menstruation is very much different from VD
Hahah, this is good. Surprisingly good [editline]30th June 2011[/editline] I'm far from a Wayne fan. But I can respect his ability. Ross has next to none compared to damn near everyone else.
i think foreign beggars have been posted before but they deserve countless mentions
I was hoping you'd posted that song when I saw the mention of Foreign Beggars, Son I am proud.
Big Sean is possibly one of my favorite rappers now. His new album is amazing.
Not at all. But his rhymes are often completely abstract and tangental, as well as approximate rhymes. Doesn't strike me as something requiring talent.
Do you rap? If not it seems a little be weird to be deciding what requires talent.
No. Which is why I said it doesn't strike me as such. If I'm missing something, feel free to fill me in though.
I kinda already did--his cadence is good, his schemes are better than most charting rappers, and he's got a good sense of imagery. That connects with people--there's a reason he still has a huge loyal fanbase even after the shit with 50.
I heard a hip-hop joke the other day: What's brown and rhymes with Snoop?
I heard a hip-hop joke the other day: What's brown and rhymes with Snoop?
Is it soup?
Dr. Dre
Hehe I'm going to use that one
Totally, me too. I just did I guess.
