love tyler. never heard of death grips, but he sounds a bit off the rocker like old em, kanye would be more like new em.
both his pre and post-rehab stuff appeals to me but some people stopped/started listening to eminem after rehab

Thanks for the recommendation.
Also this is basically what Death Grips is

It's nothing like Kayne or Eminem.
the lack of busdriver, dre, snowgoons, dumbfounded, and palmer squares disappoints me.

I need some time to digest this.

Takes a while to find the appeal to it.
It's got more of lyrical themes I'd associate with some heavy metal. It's also has more of a strong angry sound to it. After my first listen I felt like a 50 year old jailmate just screamed at me for half an hour.
Listen to Ex-military all the way through in a darkened room, that's how my first playthrough went down. I barely consider it a hip-hop album, it's soooo different from anything else out there
[editline]2nd November 2011[/editline]
I mean it's hip hop made by some guy, a math rock drummer, and a black black-metal fan

it's very avante-garde. Very different from anything else I've listened to. Weird thing is that it actually got me into some hip-hop.

that's so weird, because it's actually this mixtape that got me more into metal and hardcore punk again
I remember when I first heard about it and saw the album art I though it was a heavy metal album. My first listen I stopped halfway through the first track. Later I re listened to it, treated it as hip-hop, but very weird and new hip-hop. Needless to say my second listen was far more enjoyable.
Death Grips is better with the videos instead of the album cover, adds to the total experience.

Never seen the music videos. They do add to the experience. Gives it a creepier atmosphere and pushes the "escaped convict" theme even more.
The first thing that came to mind was "punk / screamo / metal aesthetic infused into hip-hop" (or maybe the other way around). Shit's crazy. This is gonna make some people mad. Like OF did haha.

I don't even think people can get mad at DG. It's like if a crazed arabic midget ran into your living room, sodomized an animal and cut its head off, forced the head onto his penis, then fucked your television with it, then ran out. What can you even do or say about something like that?

Nah, they've so far been generally loved.

As a cynic, I can imagine people saying ignorant shit. "This ain't hip-hop." "cRap ruining music once again."
EDIT:
This shit is weird as fuck though. Can't even categorize it.
Nah, they've so far been generally loved.
They're still pretty underground at that only a certain part of the underground. I'm sure if it even got near the mainstream it would be struck down in half a second.
Keywords: so far

It could just be that they hit a different kind of mainstream (i.e Scene kids). For me though I'm still waiting on their article in a high quality paper, IMO it's a sign of a breakthrough but not of sales or whatever but of artistic credability.
