Vinnie Paz and Jedi Mind Tricks, personal favourites.
Vinnie Paz is an idiot. He's a homophobic, bigoted conspiracy theorist who raps about cutting people up with chainsaws. It's tough to get less introspective than that.
Not wanting to sound condescending but can anyone recommend some reasonably mature and thought-out rap artists (in terms of lyrics)? I like Eminem's Space Bound and Love the Way You Lie, so stuff like that I guess. I don't like the "yo nigger i'm whack and i have a big dick" shit that a lot of rap seems to be.
Yo, it's pretty sketch for you to use that word esp. when you're "imitating" an imaginary black guy just fyi
Anyway my rec is Shabazz Palaces and Das Racist:

Easily the smartest two rap groups I know
Does anyone know if there was an instrumental for M.O.P.'s home sweet home ever released?

Vinnie Paz is weird cause 95% of the time he just raps about killing shit, and then occasionally he tries to be socially conscious, which just sounds out of place more than anything.

pretty widespread in hip-hop to be fair

Yeah, but it's few who are as conceited as Vinnie Paz about it.

Agreed, but it becomes a lot less tolerable when the rapper in question is trying to act like some enlightened purveyor of social wisdom and truth.
"The government's controlling you man! We gotta create a world where people are free! Except bitches and faggots!"

I'm not a huge fan of Pharrell the rapper. I definitely like Pharrell the producer. HUGE fan of Pharrell the person. Check out his Nardwuar interview:

I agree that his raps aren't anything that stellar, but he has a great singing voice in my opinion, and his producing is top notch. One of the best, if not the best out there.
And he also seems like a very genuine person, very likable, also -- that interview is amazing. It also helps that Nardwuar is fucking amazing.

He and Chad Hugo produced this beat... sick.
I am. Shad is at my student pub on the 27th. I'm pumped.

Just got into Shad, easily becoming my favorite rapper.
I'm trying to make a rap to diss this one guy. I have an idea of what I want my track to sound like, here's an extremely rough sample.
http://soundcloud.com/michael-glass/tinman-rhythm
I don't really know what the hell I'm doing in FL Studio to be honest.
But the rhythm kinda goes like that, then I have these lyrics. Each space is for each repetition of the sample. It's pretty fast. Bear in mind that I'm white (as well as the kid I'm dissing), so this is a bit of a lighter rap and not super hardcore like DMX or some shit lol. I guess you could compare it to Kanye / Common.
Where have you been man?
Think you the shit man?
ain’t got no heart, no soul
you the tin man
so proud of yourself
all the smoking and drinkin
must have got to your head dog
what were you thinkin?
You weren’t, you didn’t expect this
Shoulda known I got the rep to wreck this
you think you cool
callin all these women bitches
truth is your whack tracks got me in stitches
ain’t no woman wants her hands on you
'cept to change your pampers cause you sound like you’re 2
stop callin out to drizzy, he can’t hear ya alright?
look down boy, see? that skin is white
see how I flow? this beat is a part of me
you must’ve gone through a hip hop lobotomy
Need to finish the lyrics, please critique. I'd post this elsewhere, but the one in GD was locked.

That album is circulating heavy with me right now. So heavy, so 100, love it.

Beat is cool but I'd have to hear you on it with a mic in order to see how good it will turn out.
