Firearms X: Day 6,793; Nodak spud still on back order
Thanks for the responses guys. The wood condition is fine with me, like Trunk said it adds personal value when it wasn't acquired by poor maintenance but was a result of it being carried into battle. I'll have a chance to inspect it closer when I meet the seller, and hopefully it's nothing worse than a bit of rust or cosmoline.
I'd still push for getting a replacement stock for range time, if you intend to shoot it regularly; just to save it some added wear and tear.
On an unrelated note; I stopped by Bryansteins (now I remember why I never go there) to look for .380ACP ammo for my stepfather, and I browsed their guns they had. Should I save up to buy a 1941 Nugget with a 4x peepscope on it for $1,400, save up and build my AR-18 for 3-gun (around $1,200), or save up and buy both a 1940 Mauser 8mm ($500) and an 1898 Springfield/Krag-Jörgensen M1898 ($450)?

The mosin Nagant, was it an original PU scope one? those retail for like $5-600 a pop, 1,600 for one is outrageous. Unless it's a Finnish one with an original Fin scope, or signed by Vasily Zaitsev, I wouldn't touch it.
I don't know enough about nuggets to look for anything specific. All I took note of was the year and the PU scope. This store also wanted $30-$35 for a box of .380ACP (FMJ, box of 50), and $1k for a single-shot Sten knock-off as well as $900 for an M1-22. They are really hit or miss for what they want vs. what the market will allow them to sell for.
Does anyone have $3500 lying around they can give me?

if it's stock looked sexy as hell, it was probably a fin mosin.
Also Ruskiespai, I found this for you

Quick question, will I wear out the springs on a rifle if I have it's bolt locked back for days or months at a time?
How well would a Kar98 be for hunting purposes? And are the bolts on those generally smooth? I've been playing Red Orchestra 2 alot and now I really want one.
Doubt it. I keep my .22 and shotguns like that when in a case traveling. (Granted, that's a bolt and a pump, so it may experience different wear than a semi-auto.) I also keep my .45 locked back, typically. I'm not allowed by my parents to keep a loaded magazine in the weapon while home with my siblings, so that's my way of being on target if the need arises quickly.

The bolt on mine is fairly smooth, and a good Russian Capture shouldn't break the bank. I haven't taken it hunting, but the caliber isn't bad for it. Ammo availability could be an issue, but mine isn't a shooter so I haven't tried to get my hands on 8mm Mauser.
Whatever you do, don't sporterize it.

Didn't plan on sporterizing it, I want a classic Mauser K98. I'm gonna find one that is in nicer condition though, even though that'll cost me about $500 it's not bad for such a nice rifle.

I always hear the mauser action is one of the smoothest around
I always hear the mauser action is one of the smoothest around
aren't a lot of modern bolt actions based off it?
How well would a Kar98 be for hunting purposes? And are the bolts on those generally smooth? I've been playing Red Orchestra 2 alot and now I really want one.
I never even thought of that... I might just have to go pick that Mauser up after my paycheck this summer! Too bad it was the older style with the straight bolt release, so a scope would be a bitch on the eye-relief... :/

a LOOOT of bolt action rifles are based of the Mauser platform. If I recall correctly, the Springfield '03, '17 Enfield, and all the way up to the Remington 700 had direct, or near-direct elements of the action based off/around it.

The first two yes, but for the bolded that's like saying a Glock is a near-direct copy of a 1911, no. However I know Winchester, Kimber, BSA, Parker-Hale, CZ, Husqvarna and Zastava rifles all to this day use (or used until they stopped making them) a Mauser-style action, and the only other WWII rifle I can think of to use a Mauser-style action would probably be the Arisaka.

Where the hell are you getting a German K98 for so damn cheap? Even the Russian Capture ones I've seen are over $600.

My apologies, obviously I was mistaken with the last one.
As for that being cheap; Bryansteins, one of our more expensive stores right now, wants $500 for a G98. Granted, not a Kar-length, but still the same rifle, for intents-and-purposes.

I was looking at gunbroker, saw some really nice K98's for $500 about a week ago.

You lucky fuckers south of the border, your government gives you M1 Garands for cheap and people are selling Mausers at clearance prices.
I think I should go buy some SVTs to make myself feel better...
Yeah, we're pretty spoiled! Oh, and I figured out my mistake, Commie. I meant the Winchester 70, not the R700. Apologies.
Mmmmmmm, look at dat nazi gun.

Yeah, that one is, quite distinctly.
Funnily enough, modern Mausers (M03 and M12) don't use a traditional Mauser action, it actually looks a lot like the action on Browning rifles.
I for one, think the Browning action is sexy as hell, too, though. I love my Dad's A-bolt about as much as I love my 760. (Granted, I'm comparing a lefty bolt to a pump action, but hey; they're both -06s, atleast.)

I think the A-Bolt is rather chunky around the action, their bull-barrel models weigh a ton, and I think the way the magazine detaches is one of the stupidest things I've ever seen. I much prefer the X-Bolt; it's cheaper, has a magazine that makes sense, it's slimmer, and it's lighter.

I definitely concur about the mag release and the general magazine mechanism. But I love his bolt. It's really smooth and is weighted about perfectly for me.
Quick question, will I wear out the springs on a rifle if I have it's bolt locked back for days or months at a time?
That's not how springs work. They wear out from constant compression and decompression, not from staying compressed.

It is a nice gun, have to get a job first though. But I'm always seeing German 98's for around $500 on gunbroker, even a few nazi stamped ones. So I think all will be fine, thank you very much though.

The A-Bolt is a good $100 more expensive, at least.
