That sounds more likely. It appears that 700 kilometers is around maximum depth for an earthquake.

I'm genuinely interested in this. The pictures are related to each other, and that means they can't be randomly chosen by an automated program. Did they send the pictures as individual images, Tazza? If you could upload them, I could try to use tinyeye or something to get more information. Then we would compile up that and search for clues. I've only seen one of those pictures before, and that was the painting of the woman pointing upwards. As another user keenly pointed out earlier, some guy posted it on 4chan trying to get doubles.

I doubt it. According to Google, a Japanese person tweeted about it 18 days ago. Other mentions of the email go back to September 2011.
