While the punishments may be a little extreme, I believe that it is necessary. If they weren't punished at all, they would probably grow up to be the snobby little pricks you see everywhere nowadays.
What they did should violate ebay's rules. From what I have read, you are not allowed to post pictures of people in the object you are selling..unless they changed their policy.
Edit: I also remember playing bayblades with my friends in 3rd grade (2003) and they got banned because the same kid stole bayblades from some of my friends and then tried to sell them. We caught him because he offered to sell them to me and i noticed the one had my friends initials on it. I didn't mention anything to the teacher till later and he got a 2 day suspension for stealing, selling them on school ground, and lying. It was a good year.
