1.11 is the same as episode 1 to 6, then 2.22 diverts from the original story and then it goes from there. So it is a little like those films but basically rewrites everything and makes it way better. It's why it's called the rebuild.
Edit: I might be praising it too much but it is completely different and better than the original series.

Senketsu and Hōka and actually explains it became part of the outfit after transforming with it. And Ryuko used the skin of her hand to bypass this.
What DOESNT make sense is that Satsuki also transformed with it as well, and it didn't become part of her outfit.

Senketsu is a specially designed life fiber weapon that has a personality and absorbs life fibers
Junketsu is more or less just a regular kamui
