Grandfather fought in WW2. He recalls being a mobile anti-plane gunner when planes flew over and they ran from building to building, staying hidden. He also remembers a time when he was in a Jeep driving through a hot-zone with landmines going off. They had a new guy in the Jeep who was freaking out (I'm sure you would be too if explosions were going off around you), he was going to jump out of the jeep so they had to tie him down. He also got his leg over by an allied truck and it took about 60 years to finally get compensated for it (Took him until around 2005? 2007?) Great Grandfather fought in WWI and survived. Still trying to find more info (I have a giant family binder with a coat of arms somewhere, don't remember where it is. Ancestry.com costs money and the Canadian CEF directory doesn't bring up any results.)
Great-great uncle was a Brig. General during WWI and has a camp named after him in Oregon. Grandfather fought in the Philippines in WWII, almost got killed during a night patrol. Father worked for the Navy for about 6 years and worked on the phalanx turrets, never had combat, though.
My mother served as a spy in the U.S army for two years, and my uncle served in the navy. This was before I was born though. [sp]Unrelated, but my uncle also designed hardware for NASA at one time[/sp]
My brother is currently in the US Army and has served two tours, one in Iraq and the later in Afghanistan. I'm proud of him. [editline]10th February 2011[/editline] I am unsure of my other family member's relation to the military, but because my father is Korean, I assume that he was in the army for his mandatory service.
My dad served in the gulf war, died in 2004 in a car accident My great grandpa was a rifleman in the USSR army in WW2, died back in 1998 Uncle is in the navy Cousin is a US Marine My granduncle was a interrogator during the vietnam war, passed away last year My other cousin is a spy, while her sister works in the department of defense as an intelligence analyst My sister is in the US army, she's on her second tour as we speak uncle was a training officer at some fort all the way in worst korea, died of pneumonia my family sure loves serving their country
My grandfather's uncle served in WWII. And my mother spent an amount of time in the TA (Territorial Army) and trained as a medic, before she was discharged due to medical reasons (She was diagnosed with epilepsy, though I've never known her to have a fit).
My Great Granddad got shot in the leg in the Mexican revolution while protecting his wife and my granddad, He sued the Mexican government and won. Link is the UN document on the case: http://untreaty.un.org/cod/riaa/cases/vol_V/201-204_Clapham.pdf
My Father was in the Canadian military for 22 years around the ending of the Cold War. He participated in this, right near the Warsaw Pact border, stationed in Germany for a period, and went to Yugoslavia, Croatia, and Cyprus for peacekeeping missions. His father served in the Coast Guard during WWII, sadly as he died years ago to Cancer, I don't know much more.
My great grandfather was in the infantry during the First World War, like most boys his age. He lost his left leg on the first day of the Somme. My great uncle, my great grandfather's brother, lost his right leg. For Christmas some years later a family member bought them a single pair of slippers between the two of them. My grandfather began his flight training for the RAF during the Second World War but didn't see action. Earlier this year I found a First World War badge in my house although I'm not sure to which side of the family it belongs. It was issued widely, similarly to the American Purple Heart. My grandfather's brother on the other side of the family was a tank crewman in the Second World War and saw action in North Africa. I don't know which battle it was in but his tank took a direct hit from a Panzer of some sort, I believe the shell entered the vehicle and then exploded. Somehow he managed to escape the tank after the impact only to find himself naked in the middle of the desert; the shell had blown his clothes off.
my great grandfather survived ww1 only to be killed when he was kicked in the face by one of his horses
Horses are horrible creatures. Stay away from them.
My grandfather died in the world war 2, he was a dentist
My dad did not get drafted because he had a heart operation when he was 12, his brothers did though, they had a great time, they did not get send out. Grandpa was a mailman in WW2, that's got to count for something?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kusunoki_Masashige Apparently, my uncle said he was my very great grandfather, I don't really believe him though so I'll have to look into it.
My great grand father died in auswitch He felt of the guard tower
Congratulations you are the 9th person to say that in this thread.
Jesus, I don't know how he's related, probably a great-great-great uncle or something. He fought in the American Civil War & my mom is trying to get a medal he received (forget which). My mom's hobby is genealogy so I'd have to ask her about our family's military history. [editline]10th February 2011[/editline] Oh yes, also my grandfather was in the Korean War (he was an officer, I believe). He didn't see combat because he did paperwork for the army.
upload 'em
This is the only one I could find that didn't have a dead body or something else in it.
My mothers father was a train driver during the India - Pakistan War.
Well, my Grandpa was in Anzio. If I remember correctly, he was wounded a couple of times by a mortar and a MG42.
Grandfather was a Commando in WWII, the other one captained a unit in France, one of the last to enter France at the end of WWII.
I dont remember that my family had a military history, but i do remember my mother told me that when she was a girl in the 60's a family friend was sent in an army brigade to help the Egyptians fight the Israelis in the 1967 war, he was stranded from the rest of his team, and wandered in the desert for a long time, he suffered psychological damage from prolonged isolation until he was found and returned, my mother hasn't heard from him since then.
Well all of my family was and is in the military, my great grandfather from the Italian side of my family was an officer in the army and fought in Ethiopia, but before the Americans came for the invasion of Sicily, he told his men to go home. And on my great grandfather from my German side of the family served in the Czechoslovakian army reserves and then the Nazi army when Hitler took over. He was from the Sudetenland which was compromised of ethnic Germans. He went to both France and Russia. This is the last time my grandma and her mother saw him before he left to Russia, he never came back. ( my great grandmother to the right.)
My great grand father died in auswitch He felt of the guard tower
Fuck off.
My father, his brother and his father were all in the korean army since it's mandatory for any korean citizen. Now I have a cousin in the army (a sgt.) and a brother looking into joining the marines. As much as I am worried sick about them I'm just as proud to have such members of the family. The stories that my cousin tells me when he comes back to see me is very entertaining (not about gun fights or stuff like that). It's about the types of people he meets and what the other soldiers and CO's are like. Situations and a bunch of other experiences while at the base.
National Guard in early 80's Fired a LAW, M14, M16. Learned about COLD WAR SHIT :colbert:
