Hypertrophy will occur whether you like,( "mass"), or not, with any program at least for starters. Noob gains don't fully go away until at least 1, maybe more. Fact is, in the long run, strength would do you better. Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy is very limited in comparison to gaining strength. Much more of a hassle, less exciting one might say after a while... In order to keep the building up you need foundations. You can't expect to be huge yet lift 120lbs deadlift. You never see that happening in real-life do you?

My lifts (not my maxes I havent done a max in since I started). Deadlift, 105kgs Squat, 80kgs Bench, 60kgs Im pretty happy with how im going, I went from being 59kgs skin and bone, barely able to lift the bar, to 70kgs and my lifts as they are now, however this next year I want to make much greater progress.
Got a camera for Krampus. I'll prob post some pics at some point. I've not made much progress recently, though. It's largely due to diet and being lazy.
