Why would you need a seismograph?
Because if shit hits the fan and you can't contact the outside world, your best bet before walking out in an NBC suit and then finding out there's too much radiation for it to handle or too much radiation spewing into the bunker as you open the door.... is to use a seismograph. You will be relatively close to an intersection, maybe a few miles away. You may register that some cars are driving by- a sign of life. Or you may see the graph going crazy, which means there are probably explosions going off or people running around rioting and flipping cars over.
OP obviously has no idea how radiation works and how deep is too deep. Do you even know how far 20-50 feet is? That's way more than you'll ever need. 8-10 is perfect. Nor do you need thick sheets of steel. 8-10 feet of dirt will keep almost all of the radiation out, not to mention the steel/iron of the cargo containers. Any radiation beyond that you'd need 8 feet of solid steel to stop and you're not getting that. 50 feet of dirt wouldn't stop it. Shocks wouldn't do shit if the whole thing is under ground. Either an earthquake happens and you're fucked or not. Under ground you can't do much to stop it. The dirt on top and to the sides of the cargo containers would ensure that the shocks didn't allow enough movement, and on the worst spectrum the shocks would be forced down, dirt would fall on top of the cargo containers keeping them from going back up, your tunnels would be broken and guess what, you're trapped 10 feet underground. Good job. You wouldn't be able to distinguish explosions or people/cars moving around from the normal background vibrations of the Earth. Not to mention the metal cargo container would amplify everything and throw the readings off.
Guys, lets build them in google sketchup! http://sketchup.google.com/download/
I don't need a bunker because i already converted all my money to gold to be prepared for 2012

Personally when I am older and have some spare cash I am just going to build an underground bunker out of concrete and put my computer room in there. Then have a door to it be a bookcase on hinges.
I tried to dig a bunker out in my backyard over the summer. It's about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide.
I say screw shelters; be on the offensive. Get yourself an armored fighting vehicle and go around scavenging for resources with it. In dire times like nuclear fallout or any other catastrophe, an object as large as an above-ground shelter would obviously attract attention. With an M-113 or some other similar vehicle, you can setup an outpost in the woods and reposition it if need be. Be mechanized, God damn it. Make Mike Sparks proud.
I would purchase a M93 FOX. Without a NBC filter, your fucked.
I would purchase a M93 FOX. Without a NBC filter, your fucked.
The M113A2 and A3 models come with an air-filter I think.
Any of you guys live near underground complexes? I live near this complex, which is the Raven Rock Mountain Complex. In a nuclear or other emergency, this place acts as a backup Pentagon. It is virtually indestructible, much like NORAD. It looks like it doesn't go that deep, but it does. It actually goes straight into a huge mountain. It goes down deep enough to be able to link pipes to an underground resevoir, and can support 3000+ personnel for 6 months at a time at the least.
I'm going to build a home similar to that of Burt Gummer.
I'm going to build a home similar to that of Burt Gummer.
Isn't Tremors about a bunch of giant worms beneath the earth or something to that nature?
I live near this one: And yes, that is the one from the Stargate SG-1 series. :clint:

To mount all those buildings in there it took a lot of work. Same thing with the complex I live near. Five three-story buildings, mounted on springs, ready to replace the Pentagon at a moments notice, and completely lock down and seal itself from the outside for 6 months to a year. I can only imagine what other capabilities these two complexes have. I would not be surprised if they both had crazy stuff, like below surface S.A.M. sites, a missile silo, etc.... and I can only imagine about the complexes we have yet to even hear about. [editline]04:05AM[/editline]
@OP: How do you plan on getting electricity for your "command center"?
A generator that is vented to the outside. I will have a few large drums of gasoline down there and a manual hand pump. I will probably only have the generator on when I am doing many electricity consuming tasks at once. As for lighting, it will not be a huge open set of rooms like a normal house, so L.E.D.'s will be the lighting source and run off of car batteries during the night (which will be slowly charged by some wiring to the outside solar paneling. This won't be your generic 5,000 dollar solar paneling, this will just be three or four of those little solar panels you see on highway emergency phones. During the day hours, either the main L.E.D. lighting system will be powered by the solar panels (or battery if need be), or I will take some 150$ worth of decent solar powered walkway lights, take out the mini solar panels, have them on the outside of the bunker, and do some simple wiring to have them connect to the actual walkway lights that are inside the bunker.
I remember seeing something on the discovery channel about building entire houses out of these containers. It seemed really cool because you could buy prebuild rooms, and since they were all big metal crates they would be really easy to stack/remove, it was like building a house out of prebuild blocks.
Except if it rained, you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think.
Except if it rained, you wouldn't be able to hear yourself think.
You can put a tarp and some tires on the roof. IF it was above ground. But underground? Figure it out, you're under a shitload of dirt. Also, I'm downloading Google SketchUp and making a goddamn bunker. But since it would be underground, then that problem would not exist.
