he plays with a good timing on them too so he is not struggling in terms of chops

he just does it every now and then on one or two songs. I don't think you'll ever see him do it for longer songs like dyers and such, or even damage.
damage doesn't have much in it at all. only the last section is the really critical part where it is done. dyers eve.... yeah thats fucking hard i understand that one

On the subject of Metallica's instrumentals, have you noticed that the demo version for "Suicide and Redemption" was called "K2lu"?
That's pretty strange as they bare zero resemblance. The closest thing you'll get to Call of Ktulu besides the track itself is Inquisition Symphony
