CDMA started a few months ago (failed). 3G (HSDPA) is starting next week. GSM is still being used by most customers.

From a technical standpoint, it is completely legit, and an effective way to transfer packets of data with proven security and bandwidth across the air. This isn't voodoo magic, there is a section in the IEEE standards on CDMA technology. Qualcomm developed it.

gsm is 2g, gprs is 2.5g, cdma and umts are 3g
