as much as I may be pro-cosmetics to a point anything that effects stats in a multiplayer game that you can ONLY GET by paying for it, is literally the bane of the game industry. Nothing is more scummy. locking characters that could align to a specific play style because they have their own unique abilities is just a shitty thing to do.
tbh i can just see blizz doing it anyway, it doesn't matter if the game balance is fucked, if they weigh the choices and find that they'll make more cash by selling classes, they'll probably do it
I'm just saying they won't have an audience, they won't have the esports scene they're craving, they won't have the sales or the audience they have. Blizzards huge. They're massive. But they're not fucking stupid. I think they realize their pedigree can only go so far in the face of their recent failures.
i mean they are prone to making fucking awful decisions i.e. fucking legion being a 60 dollar expac that will come out in just a few months
yeah they do, with their properties that have active player bases and long term fans. Blizzards been taking a few hits over the last 5 years with their releases and methods of dealing with people. They seem to understand, from what I've heard from dedicated blizzard fans talking to the devs, that this game lives and dies based on the game balance. I don't see them killing their baby for a few extra bucks.
Tripwire already had shady practices with KF1, remember those ugly and expensive weapon skins? And this time the dare to do it even bigger when their game is not even finished. I like cosmetics but the simple fact they are using that to make people pay a lot extra for crappy skins is lame. Remember the joy of unlocking new skins and new character by just completing certain levels or achievements? Dlcs are ok as long as they keep it cool and don't create a lot of dlcs for an impressive cost.
I mean I just don't know how a multiplayer only game of ANY sort, KF, Overwatch, Siege, Battlefront, etc, I don't see how ANY game like that can last for a long time, as long as we as players want them to last, if we only pay once, and expect ALL SUPPORT to be free. I just don't know how those companies can make money doing that, and if they don't make money doing that, guess what? You won't ever play those types of games because they won't exist.
Community servers, expansion packs? Maybe you're right though.. it's just tiring to get microtransactions that only add little things like skins when they could try to expand the content with more coherent direction by releasing it in packages over a few years. I guess if you want your game to live for 10 years or so this isn't an option, but it's also risky cause it's a very competetive market. A safer way is to develop sequals and new games every few years - or expansion packs, but that definitely doesn't make enough money to sustain a big corporation.
