2001: A Space Odyssey
The Thing
I haven't seen Bladerunner or Dune yet.. I'm reading the books they're based on first.
Serenity, just because I'm a die-hard Firefly fan.
Also, Sunshine, it's amazing.
Event Horizon.
Blade Runner.
The Exam (It's more of a psychological thriller, but it has some sci-fi on it).
Also, The Island is pretty awesome.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? is actually very different to Blade Runner in terms of setting and story, so you can safely watch the film and it'll unfold really quite differently to the book. I consider them two different stories that occasionally share characters and events.

I've heard - either way, I'm just a bit interested in what the movie was based on, even if they're not entirely related. Either way, I don't think I'll be getting my hands on Blade Runner the movie any time soon.
this place needs a literature section..
Just about every James Cameron film(excluding Titanic and True Lies(which is a good film anyway)).

Firefly fan eh? You have won my respect sir.
that wasn't really a scifi
Why not?
Children of Men

great movie
Blade Runner is really good

because it was set in modern times and was about drugs and had nothing to do with anything space or extra terrestrial or anything like that?
neither is children of men, i don't really think you know what sci-fi is. children of men is a drama/thriller/action, everything is grounded and earthy, there isn't even any advanced technology. how is it sci-fi at all.
Dune was a horrible film.
Just read the book and pretend the film doesn't exist.
Why has no one said Star Trek yet? or any of the ten other Star Trek films?

The miniseries that was made 20 years later was alright

Both of those films are set in the future, effectively categorizing them as sci-fi.
Oh also, holoscanners and scramble suits.
Turns out THX 1138 isn't the best movie to watch while you're horny. We missed the middle and then realized that we had no idea what was going on.
Ghost in the Shell and Ghost in the Shell: Innocence.
I've watched THX last year. I thought it was good - it wasn't anything groundbreaking like Space Odyssey, it was just good. I love anything made by John Carpenter. I also love the original Terminator movie. It's great to see Arnold as a badass villain.
Sunshine
The first 2/3 of the movie are so amazing. It declines at the end, but it's still a very good movie.

If the 'bad guy' didn't [sp]come back more than once[/sp] it would have been a better ending. [sp]Seriously, there was no way the fucker should have survived losing his fucking skin. Never mind being strong enough to fight and chase people.[/sp]
As others have mentioned, Moon.
Damn that movies brilliant.

I'd disagree with you there, films don't need to have robots and flying cars to be sci-fi it's more about what's looked at and presented through the story, for example the Butterfly Effect features time travel and alternate realities and A Scanner Darkly is set in the near future in which America is a police state with fufuristic espionage and surveillence technology and most of the population are on hooked drugs. Neither film, however, has an particularly sciency theme.
Science fiction has many different layers to it, there doesn't have to be an overtly futuristic theme for a movie to be classed as that genre. Many sci-fi films encompass more than one. Even Frankenstein is sci-fi when you look at the themes being examined.
Anyway, a few people have mentioned Moon already and I'm gonna mention it again, it's fucking incredible. You never quite know what's going to happen next once the plot twists start rolling in.
I'd also recommend A Scanner Darkly, 2001, Blade Runner, Mad Max 2 (purely because the first isn't great and the third is godawful, Tina Turner's in it...), Eden Log, Dark City, Metropolis, Alien/Aliens (the last two are a pile of wank), Terminator, District 9 and Ghost in the Shell. Reign of Fire is also kinda cool if you don't think too hard about it.
!!!AVATAR!!!!
Men in black 1/2
Sunshine
Moon
Toy story 1/2/3
HitchHiker's guy to the galaxy / H2G2
One of the best sci-fi comedy I've seen so far, along with Spaceballs (though H2G2 had a more sophisticated humor compared to spaceballs).
Seriously, watch it, and remember...
DON'T PANIC !
Also, don't let anyone tell you what 42 means before you saw the movie...

How the hell Toy Story is science fiction ?
And, yeah, I'm pretty sure he already seen Avatar. If he hasn't he really should, it's a pretty good moment to spend away from his brain.
Also, you can consider Mass Effect 1 and 2 as an interactive film, lots of dialogues in it, but if you are looking for a real sci-fi movie, just watch Gattack, Spaceballs and/or H2G2.
Blade runner AKA. "Do androids Dream of Electric sheep". The only other decent film i can think of with Harrison ford in, Besides star wars of Course :v:

H2G2 is an okay movie, but the BBC miniseries was much better. And I'm pretty sure everyone knows that 42 is [sp]the answer to life, the universe and everything.[/sp]

I was always partial to the original books themselves.
I'd take the series over the film anyday.
