holy shit what the hell is wrong with you
Have you watched that podcast?
Have you watched that podcast?
Because he was nice in a podcast won't make up for all of his dipshittery
Have you watched that podcast?
I don't care if he cleaned up for a podcast, he's a fucking horrible excuse for a human being.
Whatever
This is fucking stupid, and the reason why I hate most indie devs today. Give me 4 to 6 years, and some more free time, and I'm sure some friends and myself could make a game of that quality. Give me another year, and I can do it by myself. Without wasting a single penny. Pixel has shown that great video games don't need astronomical amounts of money to be made. After playing Cave Story, I'm more than certain they just waste all that money on 2 or 3 unneeded employes and the higher pledge party. Whatever is left is probably claimed by one guy to buy some fancy car or what have you. I also agree with the entire final paragraph.
Hotline Miami's artstyle works really well, where the main stages play exactly like older Arcade games, so it makes sense why it looks like it does.
but the thing is that ugly games are ugly. "retro" styled games with an art style actually can look good. ie, hotline miami, vvvvv, cave story, etc no one excuses games for "retro graphics", it's that those games actually look good and pull off their medium really well there's a shitload of 2d games that try to pull off the "retro" look and people pan it for looking awful [editline]10th April 2013[/editline] so hating the "retro style" for itself is just fucking silly
Oh I agree, I don't think that all games with such an art style should be immediately considering ugly looking, I'm just saying that people don't hate it when indie developers use it for absolutely no reason. There's just so damn many games that use it, and more often than not it's really lazily done. I agree that it's silly to say pixel art is always inherently bad, but at the same time I can easily understand why so many people are sick of it. Also you can't honestly tell me you think that vvvvv looks good in any sense of the word.

Have you ever specifically calculated what it costs to make a game?
I've been spending a few months working on and off on a game I think will be pretty fun. And yes I'm using 2D pixel graphids. Why? Why not? I can't model for shit. And I have no cash to pay for a modeller or a programmer that knows 3D programming.
Have you ever developed a game? Have you ever specifically calculated what it costs to make a game?
If you can gather a group of friends or just take the time to sit down and learn all the basics in freeware programs, not a single dime, penny, or buttcoin should go specifically to the development of the game, at the very least 2D games.
If you can gather a group of friends or just take the time to sit down and learn all the basics in freeware programs, not a single dime, penny, or buttcoin should go specifically to the development of the game, at the very least 2D games.
That didn't answer my question.
That didn't answer my question.
I already told you, it should not cost any amount of money, as all you need is to sit down, learn things that are essential to developing a game (or gathering friends that'll do it for free because they can do it in their free time, so you don't have to pay for the time they waste on it), and then just spend the rest of you free time making a game (wirting the engine, developing the graphics and an artstyle for it, compsing the music, etc). No money involved.

And if you make it in JUST your free time, it's going to take forever, unless it's something super small and simple.

What are you, a hobo? They are the essentials for today's modern lifestyle. Or you can just go to your mom's house, that works too.
Cave Story, dude.
Yeah, it took him five years. You can't spend five years on a single game if you want game development to become your main job.
Mount & Blade, Chivalry are two great indie game examples. And yes, Taleworlds, the makers of M&B have Paradox as a publisher but that was after Warband.
Yeah, it took him five years. You can't spend five years on a single game if you want game development to become your main job.
Yeah, you can. It shows how much patience and dedication you have, as well as how much you care about your creations. It's what makes a great game developer, and it opened many doors for Pixel. Now please, acknowledge that games can be made without spending money on them specifically, or answer your own initial question by developing a game of your own. Either of those is fine by me.

If you want game development to be your job, you have to spend money to get money out of your game.
If I go around hating some big game that came out that most people like, for the graphics all I get is "Don't hate for the graphics you shallow fuck" But when you do it for an indie game that might actually have good gameplay "YEAH MAN FUCK 8-BIT GRAPHICS FUCK THIS GAME" As for the video is there a certain point where I'm suppose to laugh? All I see is another video full of references to jokes other people have made over and over again and there are probably much better videos out there illustrating the point way better and not in such a dumb manner.
it's a comedy video
Really? I couldn't tell.

They've already finished writing the game engive, laying out the map and settling a graphical style, what do they need $200,000 dollars for?
I gotta add that the thing I hate the most about the Shovel Knight kickstarter is that it's not even a "kickstarter". They've already finished writing the game engive, laying out the map and settling a graphical style, what do they need $200,000 dollars for?
Well, for one thing they were originally only seeking $75,000, and for finishing and debugging the game before the scheduled released date as well as advertising, distribution, playtesting, and quality assurance that seems like a reasonable amount. Also, it tells you right there in the stretch goals what they're going to do with the extra money. You should really learn more about what it takes to launch a modern game before you start running your mouth off.

A game like morrowind hasn't aged well at all graphically but its outdated graphics should be disregarded in favor of the immersion and such. Actually turning your game into a 8bit mess is really just a proof of laziness and a copout in most cases.

Cave Story was remade an almost absurd amount of times, and all those of those remakes became commercial copies that you had to buy, giving Pixel some revenue. I know what I'm talking about, that's why I'm running my mouth off. If you're gonna tell me that a simple sprite swap for a gender, archievements, or a new game+ require around $10,000 each I really don't think you'll be able to keep a straight face while saying it.

That's 5 people to make an entire game. 5 People on payroll. Now, lets assume that all 5 of these people were to make a little above minimum wage (at least, minimum wage where I'm from). This amount being, $11 per hour. assuming they all have a 9-5 job, that's $440 per week or $1760 a month, per person. So, this brand new company is using $35,200 to pay it's employees for 4 months. That's almost half of the money they asked for. This isn't even going into development costs, outsourcing, or the distribution of the game itself. Now when you look at it, the $75,000 goal is not out of this world.

I can definitely see the reasoning behind the original goal, even though I still think the rewards for stretch goals are really small, considering how big of a gap there is in-between all of them. But thanks for not replying with a bullshit question/answer, regardless.
